I recall from my own experience, high tec layoffs, or perhaps any type of layoffs are never pleasant, especially those whose skill sets are considerably higher than those who end up staying with their companies and those who worked so hard. It is not fair! You might say ... and I totally agree with you on that. But, that's the way it goes sometimes in life. Life is not always easy, is it. There are some layoffs - the way they layoff people - that absolutely make you feel even worst and would kill you with no hope left. Well.... at least, that's how you would feel while you're actually going through a layoff. It is that destructive to one's mind. Do you agree. A lot of it may have something to do with company's politics or who gets to be the next director or vice president who is right in the middle of the corporate rat race, and you've got to make sure that the vice president to be - your boss - must like you.



Some employers just don't know or don't have enough guts to tell their employees that they are already laid off, and instead of letting them know, they do everything they can think of to make you quit.



Some companies would change the security code to keep you from entering the company building when you come to the office for work after all these years of hardwork for the company. Come on now! You could have saved your gas, if they told you ahead of time, or at least the day before.



Some companies would fire one person each day. Right. One by One. You all wonder who is going to be the next and begin to avoid a conversation or even an eye contact as you pass by a supposedly your-friend-at-work in the hallway, or in the company kitchen to get some tea or coffee. You say 'good-bye' to your long-term close friends and give them a great sympathy today and will be let go the next day..



This is the only one I think is acceptable. An employer should respectfully spend a heart-to-heart time with an employee and let him know sincerely and honestly why the company is letting you go. Wouldn't you agree that you deserve at least a good explanation, especially when you dedicated yourself to a company, having worked over 40 hours each week.


.... Have you been laid off ...or just about to..? I know how you feel. You can trust me on that, really. I was in the same boat some years ago, when a mass layoffs took place. I didn't like it - a lot of smiles outside but a lot of crying inside. Or, perhaps, you are still employed, but you have a great fear that you be laid off sooner or later.

"NOT SO GOOD NEWS" is the fact that many high tec jobs have not come back yet, well, at least not so far. Job opportunities in the U.S. information-technology, or IT, as it is known in the information industry, are down by 25 percent since the year 2000. Pays are down, as well. For example, software engineer job used to pay $140,000, but the same job now pays $100,000. Not only that, a lot of high tech jobs are moving offshore to a country like India or South Asia because companies can cut down tremendous amount of expenses due to their low labor costs. If you're concerned about that, you're simply one of other millions of people with high tech jobs. Those anxieties are definitely increasing. And, no doubt, the fear is very understandable.



fact is that more than a half of all top 500 companies are expanding their development stations and outsourcing their software development outside the U.S, and their offsore contracts are going to continue to increase this year. By 2013, a good portion of all IT jobs (information technology jobs) at many of the U.S. IT companies will move oversears (offshore). And by 2020, in order to reduce costs, about 3.5 million more U.S. white-collar jobs will move to countries like India where high tec jobs can be performed more cheaply. I have recently learned that the country like India has more than half a million IT professionals, and is adding 2 million college graduates each year. Their starting salary of a software engineer in India, believe it or not, is approximately $5,000, and experienced engineers only makes between $10,000 to $15,000. Additionally the top executive ranking IT professionals might earn $20,000 . Because of a current bad economy/recession, and many companies are under pressure to reduce their costs, I see that this trend continues to grow in the coming many years.
