Home for the Holidays

When I Was a Kid...

When I was a kid, going home for the holidays meant going to Grandma's house. Having come from a strict Catholic family, we celebrated Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas every year at Grandma's.

The day centered around food, drink and treats for the kids. Every Easter all of us grandkids could count on a wonderful basket of goodies, once we found them, of course. Each Christmas, Grandma's tree would be surrounded with beautifully wrapped gifts.

The common thread was a reunion with a lot of food. Grandma was an awesome cook, and I learned everything I know from her.

I'd spend the day playing with cousins and snooping around the kitchen, trying to learn Grandma's magic.

My grandma passed away in September of 1999. Holidays have never been the same.

Grandma's Candy Dish

My grandma loved candy dishes and had many of them set throughout her house. Each dish contained a different kind of candy. Some would have hard candy in them, while others would be filled with Tootsie Rolls or jelly beans. Some of them even played music when opened, while others had no lid.

When it came to holidays, none of us grand kids were ever warned about ruining our supper if we gorged on candy from these dishes all day long. We always had room for Grandma's cooking.

Holiday Feast

Grandma prepared all of the holiday meals for my family until her health would no longer allow her to do so. Then meal preparation fell to me. It was a good thing I paid attention for all of those years, in her kitchen.

I would go to Grandma's and prepare the food in her kitchen for more than 14 people.

However, once I moved to Colorado, holidays became quite a bit cozier. I only had to cook for my husband and kids. On Thanksgiving Day, 1997, I prepared the biggest turkey ever, in the birth of my youngest son.

After Grandma's passing, I moved my mother in with me and my family, and our holiday celebrations have remained cozy, with me doing the cooking.

I'll never compare to Grandma, but I keep trying.

Holidays These Days

These days, now that my oldest child is living on his own, going home for the holidays means coming to my house. Hopefully this year will be the first Christmas in our new house. There is plenty of room, should my son wish to bring a guest, and I am looking forward to it tremendously.

I have similar memories of my godmother who was like my grandmother. It's important to cherish time with the ones you love!
