Very nice ideas. Thank you for sharing! This time of year is perfect for reminding everyone that not everyone is fortunate to have a home and to be able to buy gifts for others or cook and eat a huge meal with family and friends.

You know the old saying, "there, but for the grace of God go I"... especially these days with the economy the way it is, many of us struggle to survive, living one paycheck away from disaster...an unexpected medical emergance, car trouble or any number of financial emergencies can preclude homelessness...and once homeless, it becomes all the harder for one to get back on their feet again... helping the homeless in the long run is helping ourselves...something we all should remember.

Wow, these are excellent ideas MiMi. I don't know how many times I have thought, surely there is something more that I can do than just a couple of dollars here and there.

I like the idea of the wipes - I had never thought of that! and my favorite is the blankets, of course! Cold is misery, for sure!

Great lens and great ideas for things to give homeless people. I used to see many homeless people when I was a student (long years ago!) and I didn't want to just give money, so I used to buy them a cup of coffee. Your list of items is really helpful, practical things that people can give who want to help but don't know how. Thanks!

    Great lens!

Unfortunately, yes, we have a lot of homeless people in our area. I have helped by serving meals at an inner city church, giving clothing or food or household items, donating financially to hands-on organizations in our city and volunteering at a drop-in center for people who are homeless (just sitting and visiting, playing games, having coffee).

I have a dream of one day creating transitional houses for people who are homeless. I specifically said "houses" rather than the usual term "transitional housing" (most often apartments or rooms) because I have a vision of individual, mortgage-free houses being used. The people transitioning out of homelessness would start out paying just enough rent to cover the taxes and would receive support and coaching from various service organizations, increasing their rent as time passes. Eventually, they'd transition out and a new person or family would come in.
