I Love Applesauce

Applesauce is a great food to add to any meal. We ate it a lot growing up. As a grown-up, my aunt taught me how to make it, and now I make it every year! There is a hard way to make it and, well, my way. I let the machines do a lot of the work instead of doing it myself. I don't think there is a quick way to do it, but it is fairly simple. I hope you enjoy!

How To: The Recipe

Step-by-Step

These are the steps to making your own fantastic applesauce! These steps begin after you pick out your apples and get them home!
  1. Fill your sink with water, then add your apples. I always let them soak a little, mostly so I can get other things done. Always be sure to wash the apples really well before you get started.
  2. Add a little bit of water to your large pot(s). I usually put in about half an inch, but it really depends on how runny you want your applesauce to be. You need to have some water in there so the apples don't burn. Some people use fresh cider instead.
  3. Cut the apples in half and cut out any bruises. If the apples are really big, you may want to quarter them. Skin, seeds, cores, stems, and everything all can go in. Fill your pot with cut apples and cover on low-medium heat.
  4. Let your apples cook down. Be sure to stir them often, or the ones on the bottom will burn and the ones on the top won't get cooked nearly as fast.
  5. Run your apples through whatever machine you have to separate the sauce from the skin and whatnot. I always use my KitchenAid attachment (pictured below.) Once you have the sauce, you can add a bit of sugar to taste. I don't add much. Stir it in, and enjoy the goodness!
  6. Many people still can applesauce, but that is a lot of work! I prefer to get Ziploc containers (or other reusable ones) that are quart size and freeze my sauce. Quarts are the perfect size for me because I can get through one in a few days, but I don't have to unfreeze a ton and worry about it going bad. If you have plenty of freezer space, this is the way to go!

Tools of the Trade

Here are some of the things you will need to make your applesauce.
  • A big pot- Dutch oven or stock pot- with lid
  • A one-cup scoop or other large scoop
  • A sturdy wooden spoon or two
  • A couple of big bowls
  • A container or bowl for compost
  • Ziploc-type containers or what you need for canning
  • Some sort of machine to process the apples. There is a list available below.

My Processor

This is one of my favorite appliances! If you have a KitchenAid mixer, this attachment is a must-have! You can strain apples for sauce, as well as berries, tomatoes, and pretty much anything else. I absolutely love mine!

More Strainers

These are some hand-crank fruit strainers that can be used for applesauce. I haven't personally used any of these since I always use my KitchenAid.

Step Four

The KitchenAid Attachment!

I absolutely love my KitchenAid (named Owen). They make an attachment for the stand mixers that is perfect for making sauce!

As you can see from the photo, it goes on the front. The apple mush goes in the top, and the applesauce falls into the green bowl (or whatever color bowl you choose) while the "poop" comes out the front into your compost bin. It is easy-peesy!

The attachment comes apart is and fully machine washable. What more could you want?

They also make crank ones and other things, but I have never used one. I have only used this because my aunt has one, and she taught me how to make applesauce. I borrowed hers for several years, but this year, for my birthday, I got my very own!

Important!

Instead of sweetening with sugar, you can use Stevia (or Truvia)! I used Stevia in the Raw for the first time this year, and it tastes excellent and is better for you!

Applesauce Season- A Great Book!

I grabbed this book from the library to see what was inside, and I absolutely loved it! It is a fantastic story about one family's traditions when they make applesauce. As a sort of apple connoisseur, I was happy to find it very accurate and well-done.

I don't eat applesauce often except for latkes and pierogies sometime. I boil the apples then mash it down and add a little bit of cinnamon and cayenne pepper for heat.
