Homemade Biodiesel
Biodiesel is a clean burning, renewable energy source, thats good for both your cars engine and your own personal health. The process of making biodiesel is done by combining vegetable oil with mehanol and lye, then modifying the mixture.
A fantasic advantage of biodiesel is that it can be made from the basement or garage of your own home. Homemade biodiesel is just as reliable as commercial biodiesel, and can reduce your fuel cost to as little as 40 cents a gallon
"Did you know that biodiesel produces low emmissions, a nice scent and has better lubricity"
Homemade biodiesel - 2 Important factors you need to know
Before you can begin making homemade biodiesel theres a few thing you need to be aware of.The first and perhaps the most important is safety. Methanol and lye can be very dangerous, and even deadly if swallowed. Its important to be wearing a chemically resistant respirator, high quality gloves and appropriate googles when preparing the mix.
Another important factor is understanding the importance of titration.Titration is a test that is performed to determine how much lye and methanol you need to mix with your oil. This test can be performed using a simple beaker and syringe
"a biodiesel blend of just 1% could increase fuel lubricity by as much as 65%
(U.S. source)."
Homemade Biodiesel - How does the process work
Before you start your own homemade biodiesel production, you might like to know how the process works. The process of converting vegetable oil into biodiesel is called transesterification. Vegetable oil is composed of 3 chians of fatty acid: these acids are bound together by a byproduct known as glycerine. Vegetable oil is converted into biodiesel by mixing with lye and methanol. The lye is added to vegetable oil to breck the fatty acids chains holding the glycerine. Once seperated the methanol replaces the glyercine, creating biodiesel. This only the first stage.
