Homemade Halloween Costumes

Some of the best costumes that you have seen in stores and on websites might be a little more pricey than you plan on spending, especially if you do not save them for future wear or if you only plan to go to one Halloween event. If you would prefer to save money for something different or just would like to be more creative with your costume this year, there are many ways to try your hand at making your own.

CAPE- You can purchase a cape from a costume store for several dollars or you can also use a plastic tablecloth. Sew a thick piece of string to both sides of the cape so you can easily take off the cape. Print this page and glue the badge to heavy paper and let dry. Cut out the badge and attach it to the robe with double sided tape.

SCAR- Harry has a lightning shaped scar on his forehead put there by the evil Lord Voldemort. Use red makeup to draw a lightning scar.

GLASSES- Harry Potter wears big circular black glasses. You can purchase some for a few dollars or make your own by tracing a can on paper and cutting out the center.

HAT- Can be made out of cardboard or purchased for a few dollars. Make a cone shape and tape or staple it closed, cut the bottom even. Cut moons and stars from construction paper and then put glitter on them. Attach with white glue and or you can glue on large metallic confetti.

WAND- Find a crooked stick and hot glue or tape a star made out of cardboard to the end. Put glue on the star and then glitter on both sides of the star.

What you need for this costume...
  • orange material

  • black felt

  • green felt

Use a pattern for a long sleeve dress or another garment like a sweat shirt and sew the pieces all together. If you don't have a pattern, just copy a sweatshirt or dress. Leave the costume lose and baggy. Sew a collar of green felt that has been cut to look like leaves to the costume. After you have sewn the costume together turn it inside out to hide the seams. Cut a face for your Jack-O-Lantern costume from black felt and attach the face pieces with fabric glue to the body of the Jack-O-Lantern Costume.

I voted for the Jack-O-Lantern costume. Very cute and a great homemade costume idea for Halloween. It looks relatively simple to make and yet very effective. I must say though I was curious to see to have a look at your discount halloween costumes, but your links are broken at the moment. I'll come back later!
