Aluminum-Free Deodorant That Doesn't Stink
Not that I personally mind being called a hippie, but the choice between stinky pits and the risks that come with rolling toxins onto our skin daily was becoming a major dilemma in our household. My husband works hard all day and would douse himself with those awful aerosol cans filled with toxic manly named perfumes if I'd let him. My teenage daughter agreed to toss her favorite scented stick, but not without a struggle and quite a bit of regret.
Luckily, I finally found a natural deodorant that actually works!
Learn how to make your own homemade deodorant right here! The recipe is easy to make and only requires three simple ingredients, so you're only minutes away from having your own batch of pit putty that can be personalized with your favorite scented essential oils.
Homemade Deodorant Recipe
Aluminum-free deodorant that actually works!
- Total Time: 10 minutes
This recipe is easy to make, inexpensive and works just as good (or better than) commercial brands and it doesn't stain your clothes! Did I mention that is smells delicious? Oh, how i wish my photos were scratch and sniff. You'll just have to make your own batch to see how heavenly the scent of coconut oil is when mixed with spicy essential oils.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup coconut oil (solid state)
- 1/4 cup baking soda (aluminum-free)
- 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
- essential oils (optional)
Instructions
Mix the baking soda and arrowroot powder in a glass bowl.
Add the coconut oil (do not warm or melt it) and use a fork or pastry blender to thoroughly blend it into the dry ingredients.
Add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oils and blend completely. (this step is optional, but lovely - my personal favorite combo is clove with a little sweet orange and cinnamon!)
Add more coconut oil or arrowroot powder/baking soda if needed until the texture is about the same consistency as commercial deodorant.
Scoop the mixture into a small jar or container and store at room temperature. (Refrigeration may be required during summer months and warmer weather because the coconut oil will melt at 76 degrees.)
To apply, use your fingers to scoop out a pea-size amount of the deodorant and massage it into your armpits daily or as needed. Allow a minute or two for the deodorant to set before getting dressed.
*Remember, this is deodorant, not antiperspirant. It will not stop you from sweating, but you won't smell bad!

- I'm trying to figure out how it works on your skin. If the coconut oil melts at 76 degrees, wouldn't putting it on your body just make a mess? Or does the oil just absorb, leaving behind the stuff that actually deodorizes? So it's the delivery mechanism to make it easier to get the dry stuff on? Could you just use a big powder puff with the dry ingredients? Man, I'm full of questions today. :-)

- Susan, the coconut oil does melt at 76 degrees, but when mixed with dry ingredients, it just magically blends into the skin and doesn't free greasy at all. I have heard of people using just the dry stuff with good results too. I would think the powders would be more prone to discoloring your clothes though, especially darker colors. It's probably just a matter of personal taste. Let me know how you like it if you decide to give the recipe a try!

- I'll have to try this easy natural deodorant recipe. I used to use those deodorant crystals until I found out they are full of aluminum. That kind of defeats the purpose. I have been using a natural brand that works well but unfortunately,it's been discontinued. *Squidangel Blessings.*

- Brilliant - anything to reduce the burden of cosmetics toxicity on those who wear them and those who have the misfortune to inhale them. We don't have petrochemical-based cosmetics in our house.
