After seeing what my cat eats, I am pretty sure she needs a homemade diet as well. Have any ideas for cats? ;-)
  • pkmcr May 12, 2012 @ 6:41 am | delete
That's one of the lenses on ThatCharlieCat's list to create so watch for that coming shortly! :-)

I lived with a Golden Retriever that ate a mostly raw homemade diet that included ground meats, yogurt, blueberries, cabbage, broccoli and yams. I firmly believe it added so much for her overall health (and she had the best breath too!)

Back in 2007 I lost my dog Trinity because of toxic dog food. I had kept up with all of the recalled brands, but by the time our brand made the list, it was too late. Homemade dog food is an excellent idea to control just what your dog eats.

I'll have to try this, i'm sure it'll be alot better for my German Shepherd than the store junk
  • mel-kav Apr 21, 2012 @ 8:53 pm | delete
    Great information here! Great links!
  • vallain Apr 15, 2012 @ 4:55 pm | delete
I'll feature this on my Cookbooks for a Pampered Pooch. All the pet food recalls does make one worry.
  • stylishimo Apr 3, 2012 @ 11:49 am | delete
Very interesting lens, I think the commercial dog food is making my little dog hyperactive, so I will be trying some different recipies to see if that helps her.

I used to make my german shepherd a dinner with rice, tinned tuna, peas, and mince meat, he used to love it.
  • JoanneOtt Mar 25, 2012 @ 7:24 am | delete
Although there are some good commercial brands available, many of them are garbage. It is far better to use homemade recipes. Good information here.
  • infiniti99 Mar 23, 2012 @ 11:31 pm | delete
Awesome lens thank you for sharing.Had dogs my whole life and know that commercial dogfood is bad like the 4 D'S and the rest of the crap they put in there.I will buy blue buffalo and natural choice and mix that in with 3-4 homemade meals a week.My yellow lab is 17 weeks old 151 lbs of raw muscle favorite meal is chicken rice carots potatoes and corn.

We've been cooking for our English Bulldog for over 3 years now and he's doing fantastic. Our vet is really impressed. His weight is perfect (we measure all his food), his coat is beautiful and for anyone familiar with bulldogs...after changing to real food instead of dog food, his allergies improved greatly, no skin problems and he hardly snores at all. It definitely works for us.
  • Resjes Jan 26, 2012 @ 11:09 am | delete

Nothing beats some homemade dog food for your pets! Great lens, good recipes.
  • darciefrench Jan 15, 2012 @ 4:23 pm | delete
When we had dogs, I loved cooking them brown rice, vegetables and a little bit of canned salmon mixed in. I even baked this mixture into hard cookies for them. They were always so appreciative for a home cooked meal :) Don't have a dog anymore, but I do feed my pet rat homemade food, he loves it too.

  • Iamsteven Nov 22, 2011 @ 8:53 am | delete
Thanks for the tips, i love my dog. I also created a lens on dog food recently
  • Msqdoo Nov 20, 2011 @ 11:44 pm | delete
Thank you for these useful tips.
  • poddys Nov 12, 2011 @ 10:35 am | delete
Wow the tips as to what to not give dogs surprise me. I would have added things like garlic and onions to enhance the taste, assuming that if they are good for us, they are good for the dog too. Excellent advice, probably not the best lens for me to be reading when I am hungry though... Nicely done, blessed.

I just started doing research on cooking for my dog. Thanks for the resources. Are there any breed specific issues I should watch out for with particular types of food?
  • JoyfulPamela Sep 3, 2011 @ 10:30 am | delete
How wonderful! Angel, my puppy, will love these! Adding this to her lens about "pupcakes'. :)

Just like anything Commercial on a Large Scale becomes Cheaper (price) and Cheaper(quality). Like with humans we should really watch the protein(meat) sources we consume. Chickens are the Big one to watch and if your putting that same chicken in your dog food then both of you are in the same boat.
    Great Lens!

I am 100% all for the homemade pet food! I have a short hair chihuahua who is my pride and joy, homemade pet food is the best and i do a combo of raw and cooked. I even put out my very own super Doggie Treat Cookbook called Jackie's Doggie Treat's that's on Amazon. Just trying to keep my little doggie healthy. Great job on your page too! Have a super doggie day!

I really like the concept of this lens. Here very recently, my little yorkie got extremely sick from a dog food. I immediately went online to see what vegetables are good for dogs, and have been making his food since. (Which by the way he loves, has more energy, feels better and now acts like a pup again although he is 11 human years old.) Thank you for providing this lens to others who may be wondering about the harm in regular dog food. "Blessed by a SquidAngel"

Thank you so much for your kind comments and for sharing your experience - glad to hear that your little yorkie is on the mend after changing diet

Really good information on healthy nutrition for your dog. I have found that making the right choice in do food makes a huge difference in the health of my dog. I think it would be hard to get the right combo in making your own dog food. I have a little pom and when we have actually given him meat before it has upset his digestion. Lots of great info here! Great lens

Great Lens - Just like me, we all love our dogs and many of us think of them as our kids. Therefore, we want the very best for them to ensure that they have a long, healthy, happy life.

Much attention is being made right now over the benefits of having a natural diet, free of artificial ingredients and preservatives. Its evident that studies have shown that homemade dog food has many benefits when fed to your dog.

Scraps from our own food is a great homemade dog food, in other words, whatever is left over. We do that and buy dog food. My mother in law cooks food for her dog though. Great lens!

Super informative lens...excellent job. I think that most dog owners worry about what goes into commercial dog food. Best to you!

Thanks for adding another informative lens to the Gone to The Dogs group. Just to add to the debate here.. A company in my hometown (Leeds) made a documentary and part of it was that they boiled up an old boot, added woodshavings for fibre and a few vitamins, then passed it for analysis to the body that approves pet food. Guess what - it was certified as nutritionally complete for dogs!

    This is absolutely true!
Pet food recalls are the new scare tactics. Homemade dog food is the best way we can protect our beloved pets from harm. It is the only safe dog food today.
Thanks for the info! Great lens!
