Why A Homemade Electric Car You Ask?
To Break Free From The Big Oil Companies!
While most Americans are struggling just to make ends meet the Big Oil Cartels are raking in billions. They have us in a stranglehold and fully intend to bleed us dry. Worse yet they are in collaboration with all the big auto makers. They want to keep selling us gas. That's why hybrids are being introduced. Hybrids still use gas.And guess what? Even if we start using less gas they will just up the price and give us some lame excuse like because demand is lower shipping expenses and storage costs are now higher. With the economy in the shape it's in most of us cant afford to buy a new hybrid anyway.
Because of the high price of a hybrid it's really questionable whether they are even worth the investment. By the time you recover the extra cost the car will be ready for the junk yard.
As far as all electric cars go there really aren't any viable options. You would need to get on a waiting list. And they aint cheap. The Tesla starts at over 100 K. And because the oil companies and big auto makers are in cahoots dont expect to see any cheap mass produced all electric vehicles any time soon.
So if you want an all electric car there's really only one answer:

A Homemade Electric Car Is An Affordable Alternative To Expensive Hybrids
Remember when gas prices rose to over $4 a gallon not that long ago. Many families were forced to choose between feeding their family or feeding their car so they could get to work. I really hope this didn't happen to you. And I pray it never does. And if you build your own homemade electric car it wont. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security. Gas prices will surely rise again. Big Oil is a one trick pony and the only trick they know is up.There are numerous examples all over the internet of people who built a homemade electric car for under $1000. So it wont take long to make your investment back. Uncle Sam will even give you up to $1000 as a tax credit for using an alternative energy source. And the higher gas prices go the more you will save.
What Can I Expect From A Homemade Electric Car?
Your homemade electric car will be able to go 50 mph. Right off the line nothing will beat it for speed not even an expensive Porsche or Ferrari.Your electric car conversion will be able to go up to 200 miles on a single charge. This is dependent on the number of batteries you use. It will take about 20 to go this far. If your daily mileage is less you can use fewer batteries.
Your ev conversion will cost only a few cents a mile to drive. The actual cost will be dependent on what your electric company charges.
Can I Really Do This Myself?
Yes you can build your own electric car!
A homemade electric car really isn't that hard to build. Many folks have done their own e v conversion with no prior experience. Yes it will take some time and yes it will take a bit of work. If a high school shop can do it I'm pretty sure you can too.You don't want to do this on your only vehicle because the project will take several weeks to complete. If you don't have a vehicle to convert you can look for a junker with a bad motor. You may even be able to get one free for the hauling.
Make sure the body is in good shape because your homemade electric car is going to last a very long time Unlike a gas engine your electric car motor will still be running when the car rusts to the ground. That's because there's fewer moving parts.
If you have a good set of electric car plans and follow directions you shouldn't have much trouble. Don't try to rush things. Just take your time and enjoy your project. This really is much easier than working on a regular car.
Getting Started On Your Homemade Electric Car
Dont Worry This Isn't Rocket Science
First and foremost you need a good set of electric car plans. Don't worry I've got that part covered. There are sources for free or cheap parts inside too.
You need a vehicle to convert obviously. You can use any vehicle as long as it has a standard transmission. The lighter the better. If you want to have a range of 200 miles a small truck is best. Batteries are heavy and a light truck will be strong enough to carry them and also gives you more room for them.
You will need batteries, an electric motor and a controller. These will probably come from a golf cart or forklift.
You will need a shop to work in and some basic tools. You probably already have most of the tools you will need already. You may have to rent a hoist, although a come along can work just fine if you throw it over a ceiling joist. Or you can build a simple wood tripod.
Because both the car engine and electric motor are heavy it would be helpful to have an assistant to help with your ev conversion also.
Basically you will will be removing the engine, radiator, exhaust and gas tank. You will need to install an electric heater and also an electric vacuum pump and or hydraulic pump so your steering and brakes will work. You can sell the engine and other stuff to a junk yard to make a little cash for your project and get them out of the way.
Finally you will install and align your electric motor and batteries. How easy or difficult this is depends a lot on the vehicle you use. Trucks are easy because you can put the batteries in the back.In some cases you will need to build racks for them. Some folks align the motor with shims and a homemade mounting plate but others find it easier to pay to have a custom mounting plate machined.
And finally:
You will need a road to drive your new homemade electric car on!

Lots of luck with plans like that! The folks at convert2ev have been living green and off the grid for over 15 years now. They have been building low cost electric vehicle conversions for over 10 years. They started out with a limited budget and had to figure this out the hard way. Now you don't have to all the guess work has been taken out.
They are the real deal. Their plans are the best around and will work for you. Just because someone can put up a prettier website doesn't mean their plans are better. I Hate To Say I Told You So
Prius Recall
Well remember what I said about hybrids as compared to homemade electric cars. Homemade electric cars are so simple in design there's nothing to break really.
Hybrids are a hastily thrown together idea to make money on the Going Green trend. They are complicated. To me the more complicated a system the more likely it is to break. Well this week Toyota announced it is recalling over 300,000 Prius hybrids.
Maybe one of the reasons GM decided to scrap the EV1 was they didn't break and would last forever. Planned obsolescence is still very much a part of the auto industry. A car that doesn't break down or need parts or a mechanics attention is bad for business.

- Personally, I think the Achilles' heel of Electric Vehicle is the batteries that are used to power these vehicles. How much of toxic waste is produced by manufacturing these batteries, how much is recyclable, and what happens to those non-recyclable battery wastes? Is this really the future of the automotive industry? Or are there more feasible alternatives, such as hydrogen powered cars, which uses water to extract hydrogen for fuel and which emission is pollutants-free and consists of only water. I think these are some of the questions we need to ponder before taking the easy way-out by just adopting EVs, which in itself may create another new set of environmental issues to be dealt with in years to come.

- One of the cornerstones of building a homemade electric car is using reconditioned batteries that would otherwise go to the landfill and using car bodies that would be scrap. This technology is here today and is viable and saves resources and cuts down carbon emissions. Hydrogen cars are not. Plus hydrogen is extremely explosive. Can you say Hindenburg? That makes it a danger to have on the open road. Water extracted hydrogen is a hoax perpetrated by marketers on ClickBank IMO. We cant afford to wait for some new technology to be developed while we continue to burn fossil fuels and poison our air. Electric cars are here now so let's take advantage of them.

- electric cars are great for now, but what about the future, we cant keep burning fossil fuels such as coal to power our electric cars. yes there is nuclear(which is undesirable), wind turbines, solar and thermo power but is it enough to power the worlds supply of vehicles for us to get around? We need to find another source of energy to power our vehicles. and we need to make the vehicles specifically for electric engines, e.g. carbon fibre low weight bodies, minimal transmissions and diffs, lightweight batteries, reverse charging brakes. just little tweeks here and there will make a global difference.
