Why Healthy, Homemade Dog Food - Because You Love Your Dog

Show your dog how much you love and cherish them as part of your family by giving them healthy, homemade dog food. Commercial dog foods just don't stack up nutritionally speaking, and they can contain harmful preservatives!

I grew up believing the dog food companies know what's nutritionally best for your dog. I don't believe that anymore! It's easy to learn what to feed your dog and how to make your own homemade healthy dog food. You'll be amazed at the difference in your dog!

It's Just Healthier if it's Homemade Dog Food

When you make your dog homemade healthy dog food, you know exactly what is going into it. Can you say the same for your commercial dog food? Let's just say, if you haven't already investigated what ACTUALLY is in your dog food, you don't want to know! Once I found out I felt sickened!

And then on top of that, there are the preservatives. These are preservatives that are NOT ALLOWED for human consumption because of the risk for cancer! But they put it in our dog's food to extend the shelf-life of the dog food.

Homemade Dog Food = Healthy

When you decide to make your own homemade dog food, it will just naturally be healthier for your dog. You'll control the type of protein, carbs, and fat for each meal. And best of all, there are no hidden preservatives and chemicals that can cause all sorts of illnesses and allergies. You are buying your ingredients from the grocery store, so you know you are getting and feeding human-grade ingredients.

As a matter of fact, most people who make their own dog food report their dog has less illnesses and a decrease in allergy symptoms (from scratching to loose stools). This is because the dogs are getting food that contains the nutrients their bodies are craving. All in all, their dogs seem healthier and happier to them.

I am in total agreement. I started making my own healthy dog food for our 11 month old mastiff, Stella, who just would not stop scratching. After only 2 weeks her scratching, although not completely stopped, has gone down by about 90%! And her gas - OMG - she could clear out a room - QUICK!!! But I don't think she's had any room-clearing gas since eating homemade (at least not indoors!)

How Do You Make Healthy Homemade Dog Food?

So, there is a little bit to be learned to figure out exactly how to feed your dog. But it's not really all that difficult. You just need a good dog nutrition guide to follow to make sure your dog gets all the nutrients he needs.

  • First, you need to learn what foods dog SHOULD NOT eat at all, such as chocolate, onions, grapes, raisins, and macadamia nuts. Then there are other foods which are ok for a dog as long as they are given in moderation or just small quantities. This is probably the hardest part of learning how to make your own homemade healthy dog food.

  • Second, figure out what stage your dog is in: puppy, adult, senior, mother/lactating. What kind of exercise does she get? All these things should factor into what kind of food we feed her. Not active and a senior = less calories! Common sense, right?
*** But keep an eye on your dog. A dog who was not very active before may start becoming more active as she eats homemade healthy dog food. Her body will finally be getting all the nutrition and vitamins it has been craving and will come "alive" again! ***

  • Finally, it breaks down getting the right balance of protein, carbs, and fat, and then proper portion control.

Almost Homemade Dog Food - Still Healthy!

Perhaps you don't have the time to prepare homemade dog food. A great alternative to that is buy a quality, nutritious, all-natural kibble and add some fresh meat and/or veggies to it. I recommend Sojos, by Sojourner Farms. I always keep a bag of this in my house so on days that I don't have the time (or energy) to make homemade, healthy dog food, I can add fresh meat or some veggies, and I know my dogs are still eating healthy.

Sojos dog food is made from all natural ingredients with no preservatives or additives. Just looking at the dog food - it actually looks like food - not formed clumps of mystery-food.
