Homemade Baked Chicken Parmigiana Recipe

A healthier twist on an all time favorite homemade Italian recipe

Chicken Parmigiana tops the list of the fattiest Italian dishes. Big chain restaurants like Olive Garden and Macaroni Grill make this dish incredibly high calorie, but at home, you can make it better and healthier just by baking it. Sure, frying tastes great, but baking it gives it a crispy texture and more olive oily taste that will really catch your attention. Serve it up with a side of fresh vegetables and a piece of Italian bread, and you've got a genuine feast on your hands!

Five Ways to Reduce Fat and Calories in Italian Recipes

You're already taking a giant step towards better health by making it at home!

Italian food, as a rule of thumb, especially in America, is very high in fat, carbohydrates, and calories. It's also usually low in fiber, but some of the tastiest food you'll ever eat. It doesn't have to be that way though. With fresh ingredients and some different cooking methods, you can drastically improve the nutrition of the meal, while cutting much of the bad stuff out. And yes, these tips really do work and make it taste good!

  1. Never use anything but olive oil to cook with. So many people still use vegetable oil, which is worse for the heart because of its high saturated fat. Olive oil simply tastes better, and it's available in a number of different grades. Like any oil, measure it and use sparingly since it is still high in fat.

  2. Don't fry, bake. Baking can reduce calories because of the lessened need for oils during the cooking process. Just drizzle on some light oil and you'll still have plenty of taste without as much fat or calories.

  3. Use whole grain pasta instead of white pasta. This increases the fiber content, and makes you feel fuller, so you'll eat less. It's also much healthier for your heart and digestive system.

  4. Add more fresh vegetables to every meal. Whether it's on the side or in the recipe itself, you can add a lot of flavor and filling veggies that have numerous health benefits. Try adding bell pepper to pasta recipes, zucchini to sauces, and fresh onions to almost anything.

  5. Use fresh herbs and spices to make dishes tastier. This step is essential for making healthier foods taste as good or sometimes better than the original version. Using a fresh basil or oregano can make all the difference in taste.

  6. Limit the use of eggs in recipes. Replace them with egg whites, or reduce the amount of eggs used and replace with a small amount of water. More often than not, the recipe will still taste the same, while cutting back on calories and fat.
