Homemade Lowfat Granola

Why I Make My Own Granola

I stopped eating granola several years ago, due to the high fat content in most of the granolas I liked. I needed a lowfat granola; better yet, a homemade lowfat granola. Then I tried a dish at the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store that had strawberries, blueberries, what I believed to be Greek yogurt, with a sprinkling of granola, along with what seemed to be a pretty-high-fat bluberry muffin, judging by the greasy spot it left on a paper napkin. Because the granola was from a restaurant, and because the menu did not say otherwise, I believe the granola was not low fat. Hey, it contained whole almonds.

I found myself ordering this dish again and again, but with extra granola because the yogurt had a bite to it, and the granola helped. I gradually adjusted to the taste of the yogurt, and actually began to like it. So, I asked the server at Cracker Barrel about the yogurt and where I might be able to buy it. She brought out an empty container of Land O' Lakes Fat Free Vanilla Yogurt for me to see, and said I could get it at any grocery store. I tried every grocer in town, but no one carried it. I bought 2 different brands of Greek yogurt, and didn't like them. Then I tried Activia Light Vanilla Yogurt, which is actually fat free ("light" usually means low fat or reduced calorie, not "fat free"). It tasted the same: delicious. Now I cannot find the fat free yogurt on the Land o' Lakes website. I'm wondering if they stopped making it.

After finding a vanilla yogurt I liked, I decided I could make my own granola and, therefore, control what's in it. So, now I have my fat free yogurt, and often eat it without any garnish, but I also enjoy it with a lot of my own homemade lowfat granola mixed in. See my recipe below:

Dried Cranberries

When I can find them I buy bulk unsweetened cranberries. Lately, I have been able to find only those with sugar added. It goes against the grain for this health educator, as sugar causes inflamation, among other things, but I don't want to leave out those cranberries, so I buy what I can get.

The Apple Juice

If you want your granola sweeter, just add more apple juice, or some orange juice.

These measuring cups are great. I don't always measure my ingredients, but when I do, I'm a stickler for accurate measurements. For years I would bend down to see side of the measuring cups at eye level. Since buying these Oxo cups almost 10 years ago, I no longer have to do that.

I Love My Oxo Measuring Cups

I also have a tiny one that holds up to 3 tablespoons.

Rolled Oats

When I have time to drive across town to The Fresh Market or Whole Foods, I buy the bulk rolled oats. Otherwise, I use Quaker Oats or Great Value Old Fashioned Oats.

Raw Sugar

There is no sugar that is good for us. However, turbinado (raw) sugar is less bad, and may even taste better. A good substitute is agave syrup, but then, it has its drawbacks, too.

It's sad to see just how much fat and sugar is added to foods in the USA, salt too. It's not as bad in Europe, but still too much. I love Granola, and it is good with Yoghurt. We will have to try this recipe. Very nice lens, blessed.

Your next mission, should you choose to accept is to develop a granola bar using your granola recipe....how creative of you! I've never made granola myself but am guessing the apple juice is taking the place of the oil that is usually used. Nicely done!

My pleasure. Thanks for letting me know about those cranberries sweetened with fruit juice. I'll have to visit my local health food store. I'd much rather have those.

Thanks for sharing the recipe. I love all the ingredients, but being a diabetic, I'm going to try to adjust the sweetening by using the Stevia in the Raw brand instead. I use stevia extract all the time, but in baking, it is a little too expensive so I use Stevia in the Raw instead. Yesterday I was in a health food store and found some dried cranberries sweetened with fruit juice. It is just enough to take the edge off the cranberries, not like craisins that are a mouth full of refined sugar. I'll keep you posted.

I email this recipe to my oldest daughter. She and her three kids love granola. She has been looking for recipe that she can make with less fat and sugars. I am sure she will try this one out.

In the meantime, I will make this for my hubby. He loves his fiber!

My mom makes granola and shares it with me, but if she ever stops, I will give your recipe a try. Homemade granola is so much better than store bought. I can never go back.
