Old-time, Down-home Oatmeal Cookies Like Grandma Used To Make!

This is an old-fashioned, time-tested recipe for nutritious homemade oatmeal cookies. Nothing fancy, but yummy and good-for-you. Picnic baskets. School lunchbag surprises. After-school snacks.

FDA pronouncements about health benefits of oatmeal hit the newswires well after our mothers and grandmothers knew in their bones that oatmeal cookies like these were as wholesome as they are tasty.

I've made them with new-fangled no-, or, low-cholesterol, margarine. Everyone swears the taste is the same as with butter. I think it's because of the brown sugar. There's such a rich taste added when brown sugar is used that it "tricks" our taste buds into thinking otherwise.

If you use shortening, the cookies will be softer. Also, adding nuts, coconut, or raisins add great flavors. In the case of nuts or raisins, especially, you'll also make them more nourishing with protein from nuts. And, with iron in raisins.

As you can see, I did not use raisins when I made the cookies for the photo. If I were a better photographer, I might have added them. But, I thought it better if I "kept it simple."

Does Your Preference For Raisins Put You In the Majority?

I think raisins add extra flavor and a different texture. Having seen AKDude's comment about cranberries, I'm tempted to try making oatmeal cookies with Craisins from Ocean Spray. I got a bag as a snack and they're pretty good and I'll bet they'd go good in oatmeal cookies.

The raisins make a good cookie great.

The Nourishing Benefits of Oatmeal

The benefits of oatmeal are due to the fact that it's made from oats and oats are a good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber.

According to the American Cancer Society:

1. Insoluble fiber's cancer-fighting properties are due to the fact that it attacks certain bile acids, reducing their toxicity.

2. Soluble fiber may reduce LDL cholesterol without lowering HDL cholesterol. LDL is bad; HDL is good.

3. Soluble fiber slows down the digestion of starch. This may be beneficial to diabetics because, when you slow down the digestion of starch, you avoid the sharp rises in your blood sugar level that usually occur following a meal.

4. It has been found that those who eat more oats are less likely to develop heart disease, a disease that is currently widespread in the United States.

5. The phytochemicals in oat may also have cancer-fighting properties.

6. Oats are a good source of many nutrients including vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. Oats are also a good source of protein.

The difference between insoluble and soluble fiber, besides the foods that they come from, is what they do in your body.

Insoluble fiber's main role is that it makes stools heavier and speeds their passage through the gut, relieving constipation. Soluble fiber breaks down as it passes through the digestive tract, forming a gel that traps some substances related to high cholesterol, thus reducing the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream.

Your heart and body will thank you for it!

I have been making this oatmeal cookie recipe for 45 years. As a young bride my new sister-in-law gave me the recipe because it was her brother's (my new husband's) favorite cookie. I use coconut but no raisins. All of my children will attest that is a cookie well worth trying. It was a thrill to see the recipe on Squidoo. Thanks

Thanks for the memory, and this great lens.
  • Tipi Mar 10, 2011 @ 9:23 am | delete
Your Mom had it right, cream that butter and sugar and make sure its butter you are using. I used to love when Mom made these and now I'm remembering
that she would sometimes add some nuts, now I really liked them.

I love oatmeal cookies; they are our favorite. I was actually craving them this week because we haven't had them for awhile. I picked up some 'junky' treats from the grocery store and they just didn't do the trick so I am going to have to find time in the kitchen to make some cookies...or send a teenage boy out there to do it for me.

Great lens, please feel free to add it to my groups, Comfort Food and Culinary Favorites as well as my Best-Ever Cookie Bake-Off. Thanks for featuring Culinary Favorites from A to Z here on your lens!
