Make Your Own Ornaments

Homemade ornaments can be fun for the whole family, can make great gifts and can be eco-friendly. Think recyclable materials (cards and wrapping paper), dual purpose materials (bird seed, raffia), and look for simple plans. Below are my favorite do-it-yourself holiday ornaments for decorating and sharing. Enjoy!

Paper Snowflakes

"When moisture condenses and freezes on a window, some say that Jack Frost has stopped by, leaving the lacy pattern as a souvenir. Grace your panes with paper snowflakes, attaching them with poster putty. Or make a wreath of snowflakes by sticking them one at a time to a wall with poster putty. Kids can happily occupy themselves cutting out dozens of paper snowflakes. Then adults can step in with thread and tape, and together you can watch your family's own gentle blizzard materialize."

Recycled Card Ornaments

"Holiday cards make perfect ornaments: dazzling and delicate yet impossible to break. In a few steps, turn cards into darling globes or circles that lock together, ready to twirl. Or frame a snowy scene in a frosting of sparkles. To make the glitter ornament, cut out a circle from a card and punch a hole for string; add glue around the edge and sprinkle with glitter. Hang your new ornaments with card garlands for an enchanting tree."

Wrapping Paper Stars

"These stellar but surprisingly easy party decorations (they come together with just a few cuts and twists) are made from all those odds and ends of holiday wrap you'd otherwise toss in the trash. Hang one or dozens to brighten up the house come party time. "

Citrus Clove Pomanders

"Pomanders, aromatic spheres that are prepared by studding citrus fruits with cloves, have been used since medieval times and still make lovely holiday decorations. If they dry out without getting moldy, they'll last up to a year before their fragrance completely fades."

Snowy Balloon Ornaments

"With little more than some balloons and glitter, you can fill your home with decorative snowballs. "

Cinnamon Bird Ornaments

"Although these whimsical birds look and smell like gingerbread cookies, their sparkling plumage hints at their true nature as sweet works of art. This sturdy flock -- including a cardinal and chickadee, among other birds -- will migrate each Christmas to decorate the tree. The birds are not meant to be eaten, though, however enticing they may be."

Beaded Snowflakes

"Beads can be used to create beautiful, everlasting Christmas ornaments. These snowflakes use a combination of small and large beads: small rocailles (silver-lined transparent beads); long, thin bugle beads; and larger druk beads (smooth, round beads)."

Yarn Candy Cane

"A neat twist on a classic, these canes are virtually indestructible (and they make excellent gifts)."

Yarn balls. You take a styrofoam ball and coat with tacky glue. Then you wrap colorful yarn around and around covering the ball. You thn take a coordinately piece of trim/ribbon to wrap around the center. Then take a piece of yarn and using a needle, run it up through the center to create a hanging loop. You can add tassles and beads that are also coordinateing to make them fancy. They are lightweight and look awesmoe on the tree. They make great teacher presents as well..
