Homemade Dog Treats

As much as kids like cookies, my pups love homemade dog treats. They love watching me mix them, roll them out, and they like licking the bowl clean, but their favorite part is eating them! I like homemade dog treats because they're healthier, cheaper, better versions of store-bought puppy dog treats. And best of all, if you make them yourself, you'll know exactly what's going into them and they'll be made with care.

Recipes to Make Dog Cookies

Classic Peanut Butter Thumbprint Dog Cookie Recipe
"Chewy, sweet and adorable. What more can you ask for from your peanut butter dog treats? How about the classic thumbprint cookie shape just for your dog?"
This is an adorable dog cookie, just beware of using sugar-free jams with dogs since some have sweeteners that are deadly. A better choice is to fill the thumbprint indent with cheese instead. Most dogs absolutely adore cheese and it'll be much healthier for them.
Double Carob Dog Cookie Recipe with Peanut Butter
"Why double carob? This dog cookie recipe originally just had carob chips. But I wanted your dog to be able to really indulge in carob. So we've added roasted carob powder. The chips give nice pockets of sweetness, while the powder makes the overall cookie look dark like chocolate."
This dog cookie is another cute one. They look like cocoa and peanut butter cookies, but don't have chocolate in them which is considered poisonous for dogs.
Simple Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Dog Cookie Recipe
"This peanut butter dog biscuit recipe is what you're looking for if you want easy dog treat recipes. With only four ingredients, one of which is water, you're likely to have all of the ingredients on hand in your pantry."
Peanut Butter Balls
Little baked balls of peanut butter and mashed banana goodness.
Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies
These cookies would really become sandwich cookies if once they were cool you spread one with peanut butter, then sandwiched another cookie on top of it. You could even make them extra cute and so they'd look like Oreos.
Homemade Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Cookies
The parsley in these treats makes them a secret breath freshener for your pooch; substitute dried mint for half of the parsley, if you like. Don't hesitate to adjust the size of the treats to accommodate very small or very large dogs, baking them a few minutes less or a few minutes more, as needed.
Frosted Peanut Butter Banana Dog Cookies
One of the few dog cookies with frosting, these cookies are super cute!
Peanut Butter & Honey Roll-up Cookies
These Peanut Butter and Honey Roll-up cookies are super adorable and sound good enough for people to eat too.

How to Make Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Dog Treats

These would be great for Halloween!

From the video description:

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup pumpkin (NOT Pie Pumpkin)
1/2 cup peanut butter (Cream or Crunchy, your choice)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup water as needed

Directions:
Preheat your Oven to 350. Mix together all ingredients except the water. Mix well until the dough is firm and not to sticky. If it's to dry, ad a splash of water as needed, and if it's to sticky, add a touch more flour.

On a lightly floured surface Roll out your dough and cut it into shapes! You can do your cookies between 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thick. It just depends on how long you want to cook them. Pop them in the oven for 20 - 30 minutes. They will get slightly brown and when you go to pick them up they will be nice and firm. Now place them on a rack to cool.

Frosting:
For this recipe I used just melted white discs with a bit of paramount crystals added, and a touch of food coloring. You can also use yogurt discs.

My Favorite Peanut Butter for Dog Treats

Peanut Butter is a great source of vitamins E, K, and B12, plus potassium, iron, magnesium, copper, calcium, and fiber. Using natural peanut butter reduces fat and sugar.

Valencia Peanuts are a sweeter variety than the normal peanuts used to make peanut butter which means the producers of this peanut butter didn't have to add sugar to make a nice pb. It's one of the healthiest peanut butters I've seen, and though it's a bit runnier than others and separates like most natural peanut butters, stirring it before use and adding a bit more flour when baking with it takes care of that. It's always good to find the best peanut butter you can when making treats for your pups.

Healthy Stir-in Ingredients

Dog treats are a great way to slip in
all sorts of healthy ingredients.

Mix in some of the following and add a bit of a nutritional boost:
Farm-Raised Eggs from real farms are full of vitamins, especially Beta-carotene and Omega-3s
Raw Milk has massive amounts of nutrients, though be sure to use Raw Milk since some dogs are lactose-intolerant and can't digest processed milk
Fruits & Veggies -Shredded Carrots, Cooked Pumpkin, Shredded Zucchini, mashed banana, cooked sweet potato, or dried berries (no raisins)
Parsley for fresh breath
Mint for fresh breath

Or purchase some of the following and add into your dog treats to make them even healthier. About a tablespoon or so will add all sorts of nutrients. Go slowly though, make sure your pets aren't allergic and since some of these help digestion they can add gas if suddenly added in large amounts.

Dog Treat Size

Most dog treat sizes can be adjusted to accommodate larger or smaller dogs or your personal preference, you will likely need to adjust the cooking time, lower the heat and leave in longer for bigger sizes and take them out early for smaller ones. Dog treats used for training tend to be smaller so the dog doesn't lose focus, but dogs who need to be occupied need larger treats or small treats scattered for them to look for. No matter what size you make, just make sure the dog treats are sized too big or too small to choke on.

1/3 cup Peanut Butter
1/2 cup mashed Banana

Good Doggie Dog Treats

Dog Treats in Moderation

Dogs should only get treats in moderation since they often are higher in fat, salt, and sugar, but have less health benefits than their regular food they'd be replacing. Overweight dogs especially should get treats rarely. Just as we shouldn't live on potato chips, dogs should only occasionally get treats, and the healthiest version should be used when fed regularly.

Homemade No-Bake Dog Treats

Homemade No-Bake Dog Treats

It's nice to make some dog treats that don't have to be baked, especially since if you're using the dog treats to sneak pills to your dog, most medications cannot be cooked.

Stuff Your Kongs with Peanut Butter

I stuff my dogs' Kongs with peanut butter, and this squeeze peanut butter specifically for Kongs makes stuffing them much easier.

Kong Dog Toy

One of my dogs' favorite treats is a Kong Dog Toy stuffed with peanut butter. All I need to do is fill it with peanut butter and they're occupied for hours. Or make some of your homemade treats a bit smaller and stuff the Kong with those so that your dog has to roll and play with the toy for them to fall out.

Dog Treats Storage

Many homemade dog treats don't have the preservatives that store-bought dog treats have, so they can't be stored a room-temperature as long. Most should be stored in the refrigerator, or the freezer so that they last longer. But the best thing is, dogs go through homemade treats so quickly that you likely won't have them for long.
