Have Dry Hair? Me too!

Whether I relaxed my hair or wore in my natural state, I always found it difficult to keep the hair itself moisturized as well as my scalp. I bought products of the shelf and tried them in a search for that one quick fix that would keep my hair shiny, curly and less prone to breakage. In this journey, I discovered a few truths about my hair. Yes, it's curly. Yes, it's dry. There was no product on the shelf that would fix this if used by itself. Plus, all that buying and trying is hard on the pocketbook. So, I decided to scour the Internet and ask my mom (you know mom always knows) about some things she does to keep her hair healthy and soft. Some of the answers may surprise you and some may not.

Avocado Hair Masque

Make and keep your hair super soft

Depending on the thickness and/or length of your hair, adjust the amount of your mix accordingly. I have very thick hair so I use a full avocado. What I don't use, I have to toss because I find it doesn't keep very well.

The recipe is quite simple. You need a potato masher or a food processor, a bowl, a mixing spoon or even a hand mixer.

Ingredients for Moisturizing Hair Mask:

1 whole avocado, peeled and mashed
1 tablespoon Coconut Oil (or oil of your choice)
Enough water to make it smooth

Mash your avocado with your potato masher or use your food processor, until it's smooth. Add coconut oil. When it's fully blended, add enough water to create a smooth, spreadable "mash".

Apply to hair from roots, paying careful attention to those ends. Put on a plastic bag or cap and relax while the hair is conditioned. You may leave it on for 7-15 minutes, depending on how much "conditioning" you want.

Rinse the hair with warm water first, until all traces of avocado are gone. If you wish, you may wash with a very mild, very watered down shampoo afterwards.

Hair should be smooth and soft.

Mayonnaise Hair Conditioner

One of the best treatments for dry hair

For damaged, dry hair try a simple, no mix hair conditioner that you can easily find anywhere. Take one cup of real mayonnaise and massage into dry hair. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. Rinse as much as the mayonnaise out as you can, then wash with a mild shampoo. The oils in the mayonnaise hair conditioner will soften and moisturize your hair. This food conditioner will make your hair super soft!

Honey in your Hair

A sweet, moisturizing honey hair conditioner

This is an easy and sweet recipe which will add moisture to dry or damaged hair. Be sure to pay close attention to those ends!

Recipe
1/4 cup honey
1 ripe banana (overripe is best - the softer the better)
1 TBS olive or coconut oil

Mix and mash these ingredients together until well blended and creamy. You may also add a few teaspoons of water if you need to smooth it out. Spread mixture on hair from root to ends. Put on a plastic cap and let sit for 15-30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as usual!
