What Is In Your Vanilla Ice Cream?
Believe me, you probably do not want to know, but you really should check it out. One ingredient that you may find is castoreum, which is a natural food additive. At the bottom of the lens you can find out exactly what castoreum is, if you have the stomach to read it.
You can also find propylene glycol, which is anti freeze. My first thought is aren't we supposed to be careful with anti-freeze? Second, isn't ice cream supposed to freeze?
We all know how good homemade ice cream tastes, but this info gave me even more reason to make my own. I am now in control of what is in our ice cream and only use the best ingredients. It also allows me to make our ice cream with less sugar, we find almost all brands of ice cream too sweet in our house.
If you want more control over what you put into you or your family's body, try the recipe below. It is frozen creamy goodness.

I also like the fact that you do not have to mess with rock salt and ice.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe
So Simple but So Good!

- Serves: 1-2
- Prep Time: under 5 minutes
- Total Time: 15 - 20
Ingredients
- 1 cup Half & Half
- 1/2 cup Cream
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions
Measure sugar into a tight sealing pourable container. Add vanilla and just a little of the cream, stir until sugar dissolves. Add remaining cream and half & half. Close container and shake to mix.
Pour recommended amount into your ice cream maker and follow manufacturer's instructions. If you have a bigger machine and need more ice cream just increase the recipe.
In my machine featured above, I pour 1/2 to 1 cup into the machine and stir for 10-20 minutes. This just depends on how cold the mix was to start.

What is Castoreum?
And why is it in your ice cream?
Castoreum is classified and is approved as a food additive in the U.S. by the FDA. It is considered a natural food flavoring.
So exactly what is castoreum? Well, it is natural as it is the bitter, orange-brown, odoriferous, oily secretion, found in two sacs between the anus and the external genitals of beavers. It is said that it enhances the flavor of vanilla and raspberry ice cream. Can you say yummy?
Beavers are trapped for their fur and castoreum. The castoreum is obtained by removing the 2 sacks, drying them, then selling to the perfume and food industries.
