You Can Make Mozzarella Cheese At Home! Recipe and Ingredients

I never would have thought that I could make cheese at home.  Its easy and fun to make mozzarella at home. I ordered a cheesemaking kit from the New England Cheesemaking Supply Company.  There are a few ingredients that are not going to be found in your pantry.   This a great website and offer all things in cheesemaking including classes.

Instant satisfaction; make fresh mozzarella. You can get cheese in 30 minutes! How?  Make mozzerella.  It is so delicious.  Cut up your fresh mozzarella, add some fresh garden tomatoes, basil leaves, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil for a fresh salad.

My kit came with a Mozzerella recipe and the "special" ingredients needed to make it.  All you have to provide is the milk.  I use a fresh gallon of 2% milk that I purchased at the grocery store.  It is really easy, beleive me!!   This is fun to do with your kids and your can impress your out of town guests with your homemade Mozzerella.  My kids like to help me with the stretching part.    The supplies last for a really long time.  I have had mine in my freezer for about 5 years.

I use cow's milk for this recipe, but there are other milks that are used such as buffalo and goat milk.

Mozzarella Cheese Ingredients: These 5 Ingredients You Need To Buy

2 teaspoons of citric acid

1 teaspoon of calcium chloride
1/2 teaspoon of liquid or (a 1/4 tablet) RENNET (enzyme that causes the separation between the curd and whey)(More info about Rennet below)

What is Rennet and Lipase?

The History

HISTORY OF RENNET: Presumably, the first cheese was produced by accident when the ancients stored milk in a bag made from the stomach of a young goat, sheep or cow. They found that the day-old milk would curdle in the bag (stomach), yielding solid chunks (curds) and liquid (whey). Once they discovered that the curd-chunks could be separated out and dried, they had discovered a means by which milk, an extremely perishable food, could be preserved for later use. The addition of salt was found to preserve these dried curds for long periods of time.

Lipase powder imparts a mild 'picante' flavor to Italian cheeses especially used for mozzarella

What a great idea. I became besotted 4 years ago by whole grains and milling them and bread baking. Now I can have the delicious healthy cheese to go on top.
