Homemade dog food recipes

Hello dogs and humans - and welcome :-)...I'm Dana Summer and with me in the picture is Rudy. Will a homemade dog food recipe be safe for Rudy?

When I first saw all the commercial dog food recalls in the media I was shocked. I was conditioned to think the commercial dog food is the best way to go for all dogs. I contains everything they need, right? so why bother with homemade dog food recipes?

Well the reality is a bit different:

1.Would YOU eat road kills? would you eat dead zoo animals? or, how about euthanized animals for desert?

Believe it or not - all of these are actually used in making commercial dog food. Next to them, making home made dog food seems very rational. Commercial dog food is made out of scraps you wouldn't want to eat yourself, so WHY feed your dog with it?

2. Many of the ingredients that are used in commercial dog food are imported form China and other countries. These countries don't have the same standards as the USA, so some ingredient may be contaminated. That's exactly what happened in February 2007, with the latest big recall. Using homemade dog food recipes you will never have to fear another dog food recall.

3. You don't have to worry about weather home made dog food is good to your dog. There are homemade dog food recipes that are tailored exactly to your dog's needs. Besides, dogs have been eating the scraps from man's table for thousands of years, and they were always health and happy to do so...commercial dog food is a new invention and that's the un-natural choice. Just pick a good collection of homemade dog food recipes and you and your dog will be just fine.

4. With what we know today about dog health, it's a cinch to build a super healthy and delicious menu for your dog. A menu that will provide your dog all the nutrition it needs as well as make him look forward to the next meal.

What makes Rudy jump from joy

Without further ado, here are our top 3:

1. Akita Style Lamb & Rice - Rudy Saturday night treat.

1lb ground lamb (beef if you wish)
1 2 cups brown rice
2 stalks Broccoli
2 or 3 medium potatoes
3 medium carrots
4 cloves garlic
1 sheet kombi, Sea Kelp (optional)
Dog Food Recipe Directions:

Brown lamb in a fry pan. After it gets going, put on the chopped garlic to brown. Boil water, put about 4-5 cups into a crock pot, so it is already hot while you are fixing the rest of the ingredients. Add cubed potatoes to the fry pan. Cut broccoli and add this to the crock. Put the rest of the works in the pot, add enough hot water to cover. Add pepper to taste. Throw in 1/2 cup brown rice and mix.

1. Rudy's Bacon Bits

6 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
4 eggs, well beaten
1/8 cup bacon fat
1 cup water
1/2 cup non-fat dry milk powder
2 cup graham flour
2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup cornmeal
Dog Food Recipe Directions:

Mix ingredients with a strong spoon; drop heaping tablespoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in a 350 oven for 15 minutes. Turn off oven and leave cookies on baking sheet in the oven overnight to dry out. Yields about 4 dozen dog cookies.

3. Chicken Liver Cookies - When Rudy was really a good boy (most of the time)

2 cups Flour
3 tbs. Vegetable oil
1 cup wheat germ or cornmeal if wheat allergies are a problem
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup chicken broth
2 tsp. parsley
1 cup cooked chicken liver, chopped
Dog Food Recipe Directions:

Combine flour and wheat germ. In separate bowl, beat egg with oil, then add broth & parsley, mix well. Add the dry ingredients to bowl a little at a time, stirring well. Fold in chicken livers and mix well. Dough will be firm. Turn dough out on lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Roll out 1/2" thick and cut into shapes. Place on greased cookie sheet 1" apart. Bake at 400F for 15 minutes or until firm. Store in refrigerator.

Wow thanks for the recipe. I will try this. homemade dog food is the only healthy dog food we can give our pets. They rely on us and we should take care and be cautious with whatever we give them.
