Pimp my Playride...

For most of us gamers, video gaming is pretty much the same. We connect the console, we insert the game, we play the game, and that's about it. But for a few others, this is not enough. But some others need to take their console apart, rewire circuits, make a customized case, etc. Maybe they want to make it portable, or cooler, or simply for fun. But whatever reasons they may have, its a lot of fun to check them out (at least for me, and really hope that for you too...).

One of the most notorious console hackers/modifiers is Ben Heckendorn, most of the console hacks you'll see here are his designs. He is also the book author of "Hacking Video Game Consoles: Turn your old video game systems into awesome new portables". If interested, you may buy it on Amazon.com (the link is in the next module of this lens, as well as some other great console hacking books).

So here you will see many of these "console hacks", and a description of how they were created. Enjoy!

Modern Console Hacks

By Ben Heckendorn

Here some console hacks for the most recent video game consoles:

Sony Playstation 3 Laptop

The Sony Playstation 3 Laptop (or Sony Playstation 3 Portable) was created by well-known console modifier Ben Heckendorn for Engadget.com. It was made with real PS3 inside parts, a high definition TFT display and custom-made laptop casing. It is fully functional and the PS3 controller connects via wi-fi. The laptop was sold on eBay last April for $9,051.00, which were donated to the National Cancer Coalition. You can check the eBay auction here.

XBOX 360 Laptop

This is another Ben Heckendorn creation. It is very similar to the PS3 laptop above, and he has made 3 different versions. A real masterpiece.

Wii Laptop

Yet another Ben Heck creation. Due to Wii hardware size, it is way smaller than the previous two. Cosmetically speaking, I liked the XBOX 360 and PS3 more, but this is really cool as well.

Sony PS2 Portable

Another Ben Heck design (I'm becoming a fan of this guy). It was made with PS2 circuitry, a PSONE display and a portable DVD rechargeable battery.
