Getting Crafty for Halloween!

Yes, so many of us are watching the budget even more closely these days, but do I really have to sacrifice my Halloweening? Personally, I really look forward to it each year. Well, I say no! Spook up some Halloween fun with Halloween decorations your create yourself? They may not look the same as that pre-cut foam thing you overpay for at the superstore, but homemade Halloween decorations can rival those found in stores with creativity, but less cash.

So why make your own decorations?

Five reasons why homemade Halloween decorations rock.

  1. Spend Less. In 2006, those Americans who spend money on Halloween, spent on average almost $60 per person, according to allbusiness.com. Between costumes, candy, decorating and parties, you can be shelling out $120 to 180 this month if you have 2 kids. With the state of the economy you may be feeling inclined to spend less anyway on non-essentials like decorating. But spending less doesn't mean you don't have to decorate. A Halloween house is fun for you and passers-by.

  2. Cutting and Gluing is Fun! There is something to be said about the relaxing activity of making crafts yourself and working with your hands. And you might spend less time making your giant spider than driving to the store, finding parking, searching the aisles, and standing in line.

  3. Let Your Creative Ghoul Loose! It's fun to come up with creative creep-outs. You can make stuff that you don't generally find in stores like giant spider eggs (try paper mache), bloodied sheets in the window, or giant spiders (we made a 4 foot tarantula with garbage bags).

  4. Enrich All Of Your Halloween. The less you spend on decorations is the little bit more you can spend on your costumes and candy to give out. (Nobody likes the Tootsie Rolls--give out good candy!)

  5. The Creepy Ties That Bind. Making and setting up your own decorations is wonderful, almost wholesome, activity for family time. Take an afternoon or two with the kids, plan out your decorations and have fun creating together. I promise you that you are creating wonderful memories for them (and you?) that they will keep their entire life.
