Homemade Kahlua
Ranked #2,330 in Food & Cooking, #44,250 overall
Making Khalua at home is quite simple and has simple ingredients that you may be using right now.
I've decided to share a home recipe, well two in fact, that my family has enjoyed making for parties... ok let's be honest, everyday drinking. Some people have called this a bed time drink, but let me be the first to say its much more.
Kahlua, is well known for making White Russians which is the way me and my family enjoy it the most. It can also be used to make an adult ice cream float or other drinks like Kahlua and amaretto. Which ever way you decide to drink it, you will enjoy saving a bit of cash by making your own at home.
The recipe is super simple and take 4 simple ingredients that most people have in their homes, except for maybe the Vanilla bean which can be quite costly at $5 for one vanilla bean in a jar, but I can give you a few tricks on how to save on that.
To the Kahlua lovers enjoy, be merry, and above all be safe.
Original Kahlua Recipe
Ingredients2 ounces instant coffee
4 cups sugar
2 cups water
1 vanilla bean, coarsely chopped
Liquor
1 fifth brandy
1 fifth vodka
Bring all ingredients except for liquor to a boil slowly. (As soon as it comes to a boil turn it off, can't stress it enough) stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cool. Be sure to cool completely then add liquor.
If you don't allow mixture to cool before adding your liquor your liquor may evaporate some.
After adding the liquor to your mixture, fill your liquor bottles with the completed mixture making sure to use a fine strainer to collect the pieces of vanilla bean. Kahlua mixture does not need to be refrigerated. To enjoy a "White Russian" just pour the desired amount over ice and add milk to taste.

I have drunk it a few times, it's good. I don't drink a lot, but a White Russian is a good drink for the summer.

Kahlua pie
Similar to a Mississippi mud pie. I like this recipe better because of the coffee flavor. A nice twist on a chocolate dessert.
Ingredients
16 chocolate cookies crushed
1/4 cup of melted butter
1 cup of coconut
1 pkg of unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup of sugar
1/2 tsp of salt
1 1/2 cups of milk
2 tsp. instant coffee
2 oz unsweetened chocolate
3 eggs seperated
1/4 cup of Kahlua
1/4 tsp of cream of tartar
1/2 pint of heavy cream whipped
Directions
1. Mix crushed cookies, butter and coconut. Press into a nine inch pie pan.
2. Combine the next 6 ingredients, up to the eggs. Cook in the top part of the double boiler until all is blended and gelatin is dissolved. Cool. Add beaten egg yolks to the chocolate mixture.
3. Return to heat and cook until thickened about 5 minutes.
4. Add Kahlua, and chill until slightly thick.
5. Beat egg white until frothy and stir in the cream of tartar and beat until stiff, adding the sugar gradually.
6. Fold into the the chocolate mixture. Chill.
7. Whip cream and fold into other mixtures.
8. Spoon into pie shell.
9. Chill until firm.
10. Cut and serve.
Croissant and Chocoate bread puddingFor a grown-up dessert or a hair-of-the-dog brunch, whisk a couple of tablespoons of amaretto, Kahlua, or brandy into the egg mixture.
Ingredients
unsalted butter for the baking dish, at room temperature
6 large egg yolks
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
6 croissants, cut into 1-inch pieces (about 1 pound)
4 oz bittersweet chocolate, cut into chunks
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Directions
1. Heat oven to 375° F. Butter an 8-inch square or other shallow 2-quart baking dish.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, salt, and nutmeg.
(Note: If desired, add your Kahlua or other liquor such as amaretto or brandy to your egg mixture.) Add the croissants and chocolate and mix to combine.
3. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and bake until set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

2 Ways to Save
The precious vanilla beanVanilla beans in the grocery store normally come only 1 bean to a glass jar. The cost is usually about $5-6. There are 2 ways that I've been able to save on purchasing a vanilla bean every time we make Kahlua.
1. When you prepare your vanilla bean for the recipe it is to be coarsely chopped. When you finish boiling the vanilla bean it will be floating on top of the solution and it will need to be strained after adding the liquor. Save the strained chopped vanilla bean and put it back into the glass jar that it was purchased in and refrigerate it. You will be able to use the saved vanilla bean next time you make kahlua along with another new fresh vanilla bean you purchase for your next batch. After making a few batches you will have a enough to give it flavor and not have to purchase another vanilla bean until you feel the vanilla flavor is too weak.
2. World Market - If you have a World Market in your town you will find in their spice isle bags and bags of spices that are hard to find anywhere else. The difference with the Vanilla bean is that I have found them 5 in a pack for $5. Amazing right! Well it is to me when I've been buying them for $5 a piece all this time.

Get Vanilla Beans
For those of you who may not have vanilla beans in your grocery store or a World Market near you can purchase very fine quality vanilla beans here.
These are of finest quality and not your typical vanilla beans found in stores, not even World Market. These are pure Bourbon-Madagascar Vanilla beans that are very strong and if strained and saved will help you save money on purchasing more vanilla beans. World Market on the other hand does carry the Bourbon-Madagascar vanilla extract which is great for other recipes.
I've also include a great Kahlua recipe book and Da Vinci Sugar Free Kahlua Syrup for those who can't have sugar. I've used it on several occasions and keep it on our bar.
Did you enjoy the recipe?
I really enjoyed creating this page for you and I hope you will pass it along to all your friends. Come back soon and see what else I've cooked up.
Thanks for signing the guestbook.
