Homemade Shampoo: Why It's Such A Great Idea...
I am a big fan of making homemade shampoo and as a result people often ask why I bother when there are so many to choose from at the store?
There are 3 great reasons to make shampoo at home:-
1. Your hair feels and looks better
2. It saves money
3. It is better for the environment
Here's what I mean in some more detail....
Homemade Shampoo Makes Your Hair Look and Feel Amazing
Probably the biggest kick you get out of taking the time to learn how to make shampoo are the comments people make about your hair. "What product do you use in your hair" is a question that you get used to hearing with a nutrient rich shampoo recipe like avocado and mayonnaise. To most people it sounds plain weird to put what is normally considered food into your hair and wrap it in cling film. However, if you try it once you'll realize that these ingredients are so much better for your hair than even the most expensive packs that your local salon can offer.
Some homemade shampoo enthusiasts even go as far as claiming that making your own hair products can even reduce hair loss. I can't claim to be an expert on this matter, but if you've ever read the bewildering list of ingredients on your average shampoo bottle, you'll know it's is a concoction of chemicals.
Of course shampoo has to go under many stringent tests in order to be sold to the public, and therefore people assume that they are the best thing to put in your hair.
However, I like to also make use of the vast amount of forgotten wisdom of hair care that existed long before the advent of mass produced shampoo. Egg, olive oil, and yogurt, have been used in ancient shampoos for generations. The reason why is simple - they make your hair unbelievably healthy.
Making Your Own Shampoo Can Save You Cash
Buying shampoo doesn't seem like a big expense, but when you add up all the bottles throughout the year, those few dollars here and there add up to a small fortune. The beauty of homemade shampoo is that you get to choose the ingredients to suit your budget. You don't have to splash out on lavish ingredients such as chamomile, rhubarb, fresh sage, & cinnamon (although sometimes I just have to treat myself to the wonderful aroma of those ingredients).
A basic homemade shampoo can be made very simply at a fraction of the supermarket cost. One of the most affordable recipes I know of consists of 2 tablespoons of mild soap suds, 1/2 a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda, & 1-3/4 pints of hot water. All you have to do is mix these up and your ready to use it.
The cost of these common household ingredients is practically nothing.
Homemade Shampoo is Better For The Environment
When you make your own homemade conditioner or shampoo you are treading more lightly on the earth since typically less chemicals are going down your plug hole. It's easy to forget about what happens to all shampoo eventually; it ends up in the rivers and oceans. Therefore it makes sense that the less chemicals and more natural ingredients we use, the less impact it has on the natural world.
When you buy a bottle of Loreal's latest and greatest shampoo, you never really know what is in that product and the impact it will have on the planet. But when you make your own shampoo you can choose only environmentally friendly ingredients. Homemade shampoo not only gives you peace of mind but more importantly helps do your bit for the planet.
