I am about to graduate with an associates degree in Medical Administration. My one and only transcription class was a joke. We had no foot pedals and the home work consisted of going back and forth from Microsoft Office Word '07 and the program that our CD read from. I'm not even sure what equipment I would need to work at home looks like. What am I looking at spending for good equipment and where do I find it? Is there something I can do to strengthen my knowledge of transcribing?

Susan, do the people you work with know anything about MT?

Have they ever listened to these indecipherable doctors who can barely speak a discernable word?

This might be true SOME DAY. But if you are an experienced MT today, you know that transcription software allows you to check the patient's records and the doctor's previous translations in order to decipher these messages.

So while MT's may become obsolete in theory, it's not something that is likely to happen as soon as your friend imply.

It makes me wonder what your friends at work do? Are they making plans to avoid being replaced? At least you are...

I am currently taking a medical transcription course online. I plan to quit my full-time job and work full-time from home once I complete the course. I have already talked to a local hospital and they seemed very positive about the job possibilities. The only problem is, the people I work with keep telling me there is no future in this job. They say that technology will cause MT work to become obsolete.

I personally don't know of a course that's "Free" other than a "teaser" to get you to pay for something later. A "real" course actually costs several thousand dollars PLUS books and equipment. Many transcriptionists start working directly from home but some do start at doctor's offices or hospitals.

    Alice,

I sort of thought this told you how to get started...but to boil it down even more...

    1) Get the Language of Medicine book.
    2) If you can handle that then contact oakhorizons.com for a training opportunity near you.

Most MT companies will let you test online. If you pass, they'll put you to work. You can do a google search or use one of the links here.

EL, the $13.00 per hour was a local doctor. Two actually.
  • EL Sep 18, 2007 @ 2:00 pm | delete
Good luck finding one of those places that will pay you even close to $13.00 for beginners. Best way to earn a decent living that I found is to work locally. These nationwide companies do not pay very well at all.

I worked as a medical transcriptionist at a hospital for 13 years and quit 6 years ago, but I couldn't qualify for a work-at-home job because I was too specialized (Rad Onc). And they wanted 94% accuracy and for me to buy the equipment just to test. Gimme a break.

    Pat,

I cannot tell you about all online courses.

If you use the Oak Horizons link, you will ABSOLUTELY get the best training even though it is "online". They are the only school I can recommend. Depending on where you live you can get some "class time" but my wife did hers 100% online.

I'm an LPN looking to change careers--can you get adequate training from on-line courses? I am checking courses that are accredited by the AAMT.

Are companies willing to hire beginners--even though I have a good command of medical terminology.
