Mosquitoes Have Us Captive!

This year Time Magazine may feature the Mosquito as pest of the year.

We've seen incredible rain and hot muggy temperatures. The perfect storm for mosquitoes to multiply!

Some states continue to get hammered by heavy rains and flooding. Once the water recedes, the mosquitoes will be multiplied times ten in the little pools of water left behind. Some states may end up changing their state bird to the mosquito.

The threat of West Nile disease may rear it's ugly head. Heart worm for our dogs may increase.

How do you get rid of these pesky pests?

Mosquitoes have many natural predators from bats to hummingbirds, dragonflies, and purple martins.

Placing a bat house up in an open sunny spot is a perfect way to decrease the number of mosquitoes in your area. A bat can eat 1000 mosquitoes per hour.

Some plants may act as mosquito repellent. Check your local garden nursery for the plants that will work best in your area.

Commercial Products
A few brand name products include Off and Cutter sprays, Avon's Skin So Soft, Raid Yard Guard outdoor Foggers, Bug Zappers, pesticides, Mosquito Dunkers for stagnate and standing water, citronella candles, skin patches, wrist bands, and lanterns.

I'm going to try the ThermaCell.

The Military uses the ThermaCELL. What do I have to lose but a lot of itching!?

We will survive!

Mosquito Repellent Plants | Horticulture and Home Pest News
If you want to grow a plant that might help repel mosquitoes, there are several that would probably be better choices," Dr. Tucker says. He adds that G. A. Surgeoner, Ph.D., of the University of Guelph in Ontario compared a potted citrosa plant (just sitting there) and its crushed leaves to DEEP WOODS OFF (which contains the powerful chemical DEET, the active ingredient in most rub-on insect repellents) and found that the citrosa in a pot (as it is shown in the ads touting its alleged repellent powers) has no significant effect against mosquitoes.

Thanks for all the tips. They're really bad here with all the rain lately. Ugh!

I like the bat house idea. Fortunately we have plenty of bats here in the Klamath River Valley, so mosquitoes aren't too much of a problem - not that we don't see one now and then!
