Disorganized Confusion?
Paperwork
The number one key to organization is having a place for everything and putting everything in its place. This means having an "In Out Box" on your desk and a file drawer at your fingertips. Alongside of your "In Out Box" have a box specifically marked "Papers to be Filed" and USE IT! This one little box will eliminate 9/10ths of the confusion in your work place. Those all important papers will no longer be getting tangled up with, and lost, amongst the papers that are just recklessly now taking up space on your desk.Keep a book handy for scribbled down phone numbers and, "DON'T JOT THEM ON A PIECE OF PAPER", put them in the book as they come in. Remember, everything in its place, and things won't be disappearing on you when you need them most. Keep a multi-divided tray on your desktop or in your closest drawer for the little bits and pieces of office equipment like paper clips, erasers, staples, etc. that usually clutter up your desk.
If you work from home, another problem can be the hazard of having young people invading your work space, or as in my case my grandchildren. To keep them from busily examining every object in my working world, I've set up a miniature office for them complete with their own desk, papers, pens, filing cabinet etc. Miraculously, it works to keep them out of my space and they are only too happy to come bouncing in and begin working at their end of the office while I work at mine.

...............Now To Deal With That Cat.
Working from home does have its little annoyances, and mine is short, fat and furry. My cat and I have very different views on territory and territorial rights. Now understand that I spend the greater part of my days at my little desk and on my computer, other than cat nap time, my kitty spends an almost equal amount of time at my desk. This is not a good thing! At the present time it is almost like a war zone here as we battle over what is her territory and what is mine. I'm not quite sure who is winning but it seems to be pretty "even stevens" at the moment?I have won the right not to come in and find her napping on my keyboard. She has won control of the mouse pad. There seems to be nothing I can do to win back that little 18cm square plot of land. So I have pretty much conceded defeat on that one, she sits on her padded little cushion grinning at me while I maneuver my brand new optical mouse in front of her.
The printer is another area of the desk that is still under debate between the two of us. I believe I should have full rights to it and she believes that any papers exiting it are hers to attack and shred into a gazillion little pieces.
Pens, paper-clips and erasers are also still under discussion, although I think I may be losing ground on that one! She is under the impression that they should be under the desk while I believe they should be on it. I have no idea where she gets her logic from? So while I get ready for another serious round of negotiations she is busy weaving back and forth in front of my screen. She is probably contemplating her next move, and as she was outside eating grass earlier, that is one very scary thought!

Very interesting post!
It's not an uncommon struggle for most to keep their working areas clean.
It can be so easy to keep your desk clear once you've learned how to organize your workspace and put things back in their home when you're done with them. Take the last five minutes of your day to straighten your desk and it will hopefully stay that way from here on out.

I have reached a compromise with my cat. He has his own office chair next to mine (his is more comfortable) and he stays in his space - I stay in mine. That's half the battle against disorganisation. As for the other half - filing (!) I am still waging my personal war. You're right, it's a matter of having a place for everything and everything in its place.
