Homeopathy For Cats

If you are new to using homeopathy, then you should first understand that it does not work like modern drugs and medication. As a very simple explanation, homeopathy works on the energy of the cat, to stimulate an immune response and strengthen against disease.

This is the exact opposite of what anti-biotics do. Antibiotics are made to kill things, bugs bacteria, infection ... and they do a very good job of that. However, they also kill some good things we need to maintain inside our bodies, including our beneficial bacteria.

Although sometimes you can see sudden and amazing results with homeopathic remedies (and I certainly have seen some awesome results), more often than not, homeopathic healing takes time and can be very subtle.

Depending on the length and depth of the illness, you may also see ups, downs and even plateaus. This happens when a level of healing is reached and then it plateaus out - as the cat's body adjusts to the new level of health. Once equilibrium is achieved at that level, then the healing starts again.

You can visualize it kinda kind like walking up stairs. Imagine that the bottom step is illness and poor health, and the top step is perfect health. Yeah, I know it is a journey and a half! On the way up, you need to stop and rest on each stair - to get your breath and build your strength for the next step.

There are two quite different "schools" of homeopathy, and both rather disagree with the other. Here is a quick examination of the differences between the two:

Classical Homeopathy:

This is the original method as developed by Samuel Hahnnemann, where the individual is treated and not so much the disease they are showing. A "case" is taken of the patient, which involves getting as much information about them as possible, including health, body type, emotional and mental type. Once a case has been taken, a single remedy is prescribed and is usually be the only remedy used until the "issue" is resolved. Then a different remedy will be prescribed to clear up another issue.

Clinical Homeopathy.

This is more like a modern day physician's approach. Remedies are prescribed based on the illness or symptoms. There is often more than one remedy taken at a time. These types of remedies are called "combination remedies".

Treating a cat with homeopathic remedies is extremely simple. Since you will be using either teeny pills or a liquid, there is no nasty taste or forcing things down your cats throat.

Pills can be different sizes depending on where you buy them from. The more commercial pills are usually larger than those you can buy from a homeopath or a homeopathic dispensary. The photos here show you how small some pills can be.

The swiftest way for the remedies to work is that they should make contact with the mucous membranes, where they can be quickly absorbed into the system. My preferred method is giving drops to the cat's mouth. You can do this when the cat is sleeping, or cuddling on your lap. You are aiming not at the throat (swallowing is not necessary), but more the mucous membranes inside of the lips. So all you need to do is ease the skin down a little and in it goes. No fuss, no bother.

The pills may be given to the cat as is. I do this pretty much the same way as above. As the pills I use are only about the size of a pin head (see photo), they just stick to anything moist. Therefore, dropping a couple into the mouth in the same way as the drops (as above) is very easy.

You can also put the pills into your cat's water. If your cat does not drink very much then you should try one of the above methods to make sure you cat is getting his proper remedy dose.

Although those couple of methods are the best and easiest, if you are not able to use them for some reason, then remedies can be applied to the skin. Make a liquid (aqueous) dosage up and put the drops onto the inside of the ear leather. You can pet and rub the cat's ear until she is quiet, then gently fold it a little over your thumb to bare the skin, then put the drops on. You can also separate the cat's fur on the back of her neck or head and apply the remedy to the skin there.
