Many people have an idea that medicines have the property of healing diseases and that they have no fundamental action of their own on our system when taken in health. But the fact is that about every medicinal agent, when taken in health, produces its own individual symptoms. Thus when an overdose of Arsenic is taken vomiting, purging and thirst set in; when a heavy dose of opium is ingested, it induces constipation, stupor etc. Now, there are assured diseases too, in the course of which we meet with similar symptoms. For example, in cholera we get ceaseless symptoms. In cholera we get nonstop vomiting and purging with much thirst; in certain diseased conditions we get 'coma' or a state of deep unconsciousness and oftentimes constipation too. A Homeopath seizes hold of these two things - (1) the symptoms created by a drug on a healthy man's system, and (2) the various symptoms formed in course of several diseases; and intelligently fits in the two, finding out the largest number of their points of contact; and he does something more - he uses a very tiny dose of a drug. A homeopath, for example, face to face with a case of cholera, will pick a very small dose of arsenic, as soon as he meets with the symptoms - incessant vomiting, purging, insatiable thirst. The three fundamental points of 'homeopathy' are:-

1. Use of minimum dose.
2. Use of a single drug at a time.
3. Use of medicines, the totality of whose symptoms are similar to those produced by the disease in question.

The Great messenger of the 'Law of Similar' was Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann. He was born on the 10th April, 1755, in the place of Meissen in Saxony (Germany). His father was a porcelain painter and young Samuel had to help his father in the daytime and learn his lessons at night. Under such difficulties he followed his studies. In his 24th year he got his M.D. degrees and in 1782 he married Henrietta Kuchler a talented German Lady. He was then appointed Senior Surgeon to the Dresden Hospital, which he gave up for private practice in a small village near Leipzic. This he threw up in hatred, born of uncertainty of the action of the medicines then in use. He returned to his chemical studies and eked out a inadequate living by translating scientific works into the German language. There was illness among the children in his family and as an agonistic in the medicines of the day, he let them suffer in silence rather than treat his dears with the uncertain medicines. Yet he did not lose heart, for he understood that in His providence God has surely remedies for his sickening sons and for suffering humanity at large. And he simply patiently waited for the time when God would expose the remedies to him.
In 1790 while he was translating into German Cullen's Materia Medica, amongst others, he came across Cinchona or the Peruvian Bark and observed properties of it somewhat aggressive to each other. And arguing by analogy, that Cinchona cured ague, he thought that Cinchona might give increase to ague like symptoms, if taken in health. He began to try its property on his own system. He had only to try the effects of Cinchona on his own system to be persuaded that it produced symptoms similar to those of ague. This led him to try in succession a number of other drugs on his system and all these trials revealed to him the welcome truth of "Similia Similibus Curentur." Thus, like the discovery of law of Gravitation by Newton, Hahnemann easily revealed the law of Similars.

The Best Time for taking homeo drugs is, early in the morning when the stomach is empty. In relation to food, drugs should be taken either an hour before, or two hours after eating. In cases of fevers, medicines should be taken when the temperature is coming down; in case of convulsion or hysterical fits, at the time when these are coming on. All medicines should be suspended, as long as there is an amelioration of symptoms.

In commencing homeopathic drugs-shortly after a course of allopathic or other treatments or even after fruitless course of homeopathic treatment, start with two or three doses of Camphor or Nux Vomica 30. Then use the necessary medicine.

The use of Tobacco is forbidden only an hour before and an hour after the time when a medicine is taken; but the use of spices and Camphor is to be avoided while undergoing homeopathic treatment.

The use of charcoal or linseed-poultice for hastening the maturation of boils, the use of lancet in opening them, the use of a soap-water-enema to speedily unload the bowels, of ice in cases of headache or nose bleed, or of flannel compress - are always permitted during the course of homeopathic treatment, whenever the necessity arises.
