The Definitive Guide To Home Organization for Busy People

How to Avoid the two biggest pitfalls to Home Organization.

What are the two biggest stumbling blocks or pitfalls that people encounter when they attempt to Organize their homes? Most people have encountered these pitfalls at least to some degree.

The first stumbling block or pitfall is underestimating the job or project and biting off more than one can chew. Most of us can relate to this. Have you ever tried to reorganize your bedroom or even your bedroom closet only to find yourself knee deep in a mess and out of time and energy. Then you have to just pack it all back up any way that you can or worse leave it like that and have to deal with it again another day. Instead of feeling a sense of accomplishment you end up feeling at the very least a little defeated.

It can at times be very difficult to estimate the amount of time a Home Organization project might take and it is easy to underestimate the amount of time needed. To avoid this pitfall try breaking the job down into smaller pieces or zones. Instead of the whole closet try just a piece or section at a time. Like just the upper shelve or just the shoes. Instead of the whole bedroom try dividing the room into zones. Look at it like a clock and each hour of the clock is a zone. Pick a corner or a spot that will be 12 O'clock and then work on one or two zones at a time and finish them before starting on another. When you break the job down into smaller manageable pieces it is much easier to judge the amount of time needed for each area or zone and you will feel a nice sense of accomplishment as you get each zone or area done and this will put wind into your sail and give you momentum to stick with it and get the rest of the job done.

The second biggest pitfall or stumbling block when it comes to Home organization is loosing focus. I'm sure that most of us can relate to this one as well. Your reorganizing the closet, stuff is every where and you find a box of papers, old cards or photos. You haven't seen this stuff in years. Half an hour later you realize that your sitting there looking threw all of this stuff and now your focus and desire to work on the closet is waining. You have lost a lot of time and the wind is gone from your sail. Now maybe you can get back on track and complete your project but in many cases once the focus is lost often the results are a hastily completed project that is only marginally better than what you started out with.

Of course the best way to avoid this second pitfall is to not fall into the first one. If you divide up the project into smaller pieces or zones it is easier to keep focused and on track. Have a plastic storage bin or a box set aside for those papers, cards or photos that will need some time to go threw. Then designate that box or bin as another zone or project for another time. Don't let it rob the wind from your sail and cause you to loose your focus during the project at hand. Once you learn to break down a home organization or reorganization project into manageable pieces or zones and stay focused on each one, one at a time, you will find that it is easy and fun getting organized and your feelings of accomplishment will give you the incentive to tackle the next area or the next home organization project.
