How to Home Organize

Never has it been more important to home organize! The piles seem to appear out of nowhere. When the mess starts, you often don't even realize it has begun as the papers, bills, etc. just begin to accumulate around you. Before you know it, the clutter seems to be consuming your life.

The most daunting part for everyone is where to begin to home organize. Step 1 is to acknowledge how your own behavior has contributed to the situation and commit yourself to making a real change. In addition to your commitment, keep it simple and realistic. For your own sanity, be sure to include some small projects in the beginning to build an immediate track record of success. Next up is to decide how you would like to implement your plan and what your schedule will be.

What You Need to Start Any Home Organize Project!

OK...you've got a rough plan, schedule, goals to achieve and rewards for yourself for every achievement, what next? Let's get started, first up get a timer (preferably something portable with an alarm), trash bags, duster, permanent marker, and 3 boxes. Think of the timer as your sanity monitor. For most, 30 minutes - 1 hour organizing sessions is more than enough especially in the beginning. It's really important that you restrict yourself to no more than two organizing sessions in a day! The temptation is to keep going once you begin. However, you are in this for the long haul. It will take time but will be organized and clean very soon. Just keep it simple, realistic, and keep at it.

Getting into the Home Organize Mind-Set

Questions to ask while sorting:
-- Is there a sentimental reason you have this item?
-- Does this item bring back memories (hint: you should get it out of your space if it is a bad memory)?
-- Do I really like this item?
-- When did you last use or refer to this item?
-- Did you use this item in the last 12 months?
-- Does this item still work or is it trash?
-- Has something else replaced the need for this item?

Home Organize Finish Line

Once the "Throw" box is full, take it out to the garbage. You want to get it out of the house as quickly as possible. Put a new trash bag in the "Throw" box and keep going. Similarly, once the "Give" box is full, tape it up and take it to your car. Be sure to drop it off at your favorite charity as soon as possible. Find another "Give" box, label it, and continue organizing. As soon as the "Keep" box is full, then it is time to put those items away. If you do not know where to put away an item because it doesn't have a home yet, then just place it in the correct room. Everything will have a proper place by the time you have done all the steps to home organize. The timer is your queue to empty all the boxes and stow them away for next time.
