Homeschool Should Be Fun!

...Well at least some of the time! As a rule, home school field trips are different than those in traditional school. They are usually more fun because they are parent or student planned and therefore meet the interest of the student.

There are many field trip learning opportunities for high school homeschoolers. Yes, there are obviously the traditional ones such as museums, amusement parks, art centers and college campuses. But there are other great options as well.

Great Field Trip Ideads For Homeschool (or other!) Teens

  • Volunteer-related field trips. These are always a big hit. These give your teen a chance to serve and learn at the same time.
  • Business Related Field Trips. There are factory tours and theater trips. Many businesses in the food industry offer students the chance to gain hands-on experience in the field. Bakeries, large restaurants and food manufacturing plants are often willing to accommodate students for the day.
  • Extended Theme Camps. There are theme camps all across the country, which offer a wonderful extended field trip opportunity for homeschoolers. Space camp, drama camp, computer camp, sports camp, and music camp are just a small sample of what is actually available. There are even health science related camps for high school teens run by universities. Worldview and law camps are held across the country as well. Check out Pensacola Christian College and Patrick Henry College for teen camps with a Christian perspective.
  • Major City Tours. Another great option for a high school field trip is a city tour. Major cities such as Chicago, Washington D.C., New York, Boston, Nashville and Atlanta are just a few interesting choices worth considering.
  • Living History. This fall we toured many major historical sites in the northeast. We usually went when there was some kind of reenactment or encampment. We spent time talking with the actors and found that there are groups that put on these reenactments and they go from site to site on the weekends. (My boys were like, "Where do we enlist!") Actors have to know their history and characters well.

Involve Teens In Field Trip Plans

Give them as much involvement as possible. Doing the research and legwork to take learning on the road can be a learning experience in itself.

Living History Museums- Still Great For Teen Field Trips

There is something special about living history museums and battle reenactments. Our family goes to many of these each year and we always find teenagers in the crowd or playing the part.. In fact we've met several teen-parent duos that travel and act in the "living history" dramas on the weekends. Places like the Plimoth Plantation employ teen volunteers.

This book is an interesting look at the performance techniques of Living History Museums and cultural institutions with costumed live performances. It gives an new understanding to Living History Institutions such as Plimoth Plantation and Colonial Williamsburg. Great resource for teens to use if they wanted to start a living history program or camp program for younger kids.

We always enjoyed visiting what was then Marine World Africa USA. Interaction with the animals was always a treat for all ages. And our travels to Canada were enjoyable and taught us about geography, map-reading, culture, and language.

This is an important subject, I found that our groups didn't cater to older children when it came to field trips so we had to create our own. Both my boys really enjoyed exploring caves!

We found travel to be one of the most worthwhile educational experiences for our family. It helped us learn geography, history, math, writing, and more. We highly recommend it.
