Homeschool games promote learning and family bonding. They are a great way to build language, mathematical and thinking skills, and they also teach good character.

Here are some tips for choosing fun and educational homeschool games!

Choosing Homeschool Games

Playing games is a great way add fun to your homeschooling curriculum. Games teach sportsmanship, decision making and perserverance. They also reinforce educational concepts. Consider adding these types of games to your home school schedule:
  • Pen and paper games like soduku, hangman, crossword puzzles and word searches can serve as inexpensive vocabulary exercises and critical thinking activities.
  • Card games build number skills and aid with memory development. Cards are highly portable and can be used in a variety of ways.
  • Puzzles improve visual discrimination, and can reinforce learning in subjects like anatomy and geography. They are great cooperative activity for family members of all ages.
  • Trivia games are great for reviewing vocabulary words, Bible verses and other types of factual information. These homeschool games also help improve memory and recall.
  • Charades, pictionary and other action games get family members up and moving. These games help children feel comfortable in front of a crowd and promote bonding among team members.
  • Board games are a favorite in every family. They are great for building math, language and critical thinking skills. You can find inexpensive board games at garage sales and thrift stores.
  • Chess helps students develop logical thinking and problem solving skills, and increases performance in math and science. It is also believed to boost a student's IQ.

Family Game Nights

Set aside one evening per week to have a game night for family members of all ages. Order pizza, make your favorite dessert, or pop popcorn. Play fun music, and let younger ones stay up later than usual. These nights will give your children something to look forward to and memories they will have forever.

Alternate between cooperative and competitive games. Cooperative games have no winners or losers, and promote bonding and teamwork among family members. Competitive games teach children to be good winners and losers. They encourage good sportsmanship and encourage children to work towards a goal.

Include everyone in your game nights by choosing games that cater to different interests and age levels. Let younger children sit in your lap or move playing pieces. Have older children engage younger siblings in a game of memory or bingo.
