Learn to Play Piano by Playing a Fun Game

Step 1: Just hit the game objects at the right time and you're playing a song! The game objects rise from the bottom to the top along a corresponding colored line that matches the color code of the key being used. The key is pressed when the game object reaches the matching key of the piano graphic at the top of the page and the game object changes as the note is played.

Piano Wizard Step 1: Game in Action

An image of a very basic setting... with only the right-hand keys activated, and set at a very slow tempo.

Piano Wizard Step 1

This is one of several backgrounds the player can choose from... along with one option for moving objects across the computer screen. The alien changes its appearance upon the students successful key strike. If the wrong piano key is chosen by the student, the face remains unchanged.

I set the screen at a very slow tempo in order that I could catch the alien's face changing while at the same time catching a shot of the screen! Takes a bit of practice. lol I could have also chose a quicker tempo and used both hands to play, which would have given us a lot more alien faces to see heading up towards the color-coded keys. Hopefully, despite my only giving you a couple extraterrestrial faces... you still get the idea!

Rotate the Screen

Step 2: The game rotates and you begin to see how written music is organized. This allows the student to quickly adapt to the horizontal nature of music notation and assists in coordination by keeping the right hand corresponding to the game objects on the top of the screen and the left on the bottom.

Piano Wizard Step 2

Here You See the Screen Change

Piano Wizard Step 2

Step 2 prepares the student for reading music in the proper left to right format. Once again, the student may choose from many backgrounds and moving objects.

Step 2... The Option to Label Characters with the Names of Represented Notes

This is another example of what you might see in level 2... you have the option to show the characters labeled with their corresponding musical notes.

Piano Wizard Step 2 (with lettered notes option)

I love this feature! My kids and I can learn the names of the notes just a bit earlier... maybe even subconsiously! lol

Notice too, that this screen shows two-handed piano playing. The other screen shots on this lens show only right-handed playing. You can set the game for either option, or set for left-handed playing.

Begin Learning the Notes

Step 3: Game characters become color-coded notes on a musical staff, taking you into the world of real musical notation. Notes and rhythm become second nature. This transition allows the student to keep the same key matching color scheme while learning musical notation.

In Step 3, We Begin to See Real Musical Notes

Again... this is what the game would look like set to play with only your right-hand.

Piano Wizard Step 3

As with speech... we learn to talk before we write or spell... why not learn to play music, before we learn to read it? Now that we've been playing music in steps 1 and 2, it's time to begin learning to identify and read musical notes.

Finally You're Reading Real Music!

Step 4: The colored notes change to black on a musical staff, making the transition to reading actual musical notation fun and effortless! The student is now playing and reading music.

Piano Wizard Step 4

The Final Chapter... Real Notes! Oh... and don't judge this program by my score... Taking images of the game in action while playing the piano is a bit of a challenge!

Piano Wizard Step 4

Once you and your student have learned to read musical notes through Piano Wizard, you'll be able to take that knowledge with you to any piano!

Now You're Playing on a Real Piano

Reading sheet music and entertaining the family

Step 5: Take it to a real piano with all you've learned from the Piano Wizard Academy! This is where the true strength of the Piano Wizard Academy is found, taking it to the piano with the "Art of Music": Phrasing, Posture, Dynamics and Technique. The Tutorial DVD and Songbook lessons guide you through the process.
