On January 12, 2010, at 21:53 UTC, (4:53 pm local time) Haiti was struck by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake, the country's most severe earthquake in over 200 years. The epicenter of the quake was just outside the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. It has been estimated that the death toll could reach 200,000. Widespread damage resulted from the quake. The capital city was devastated. The Presidential Palace was badly damaged, with the second floor entirely collapsing onto the first floor; the Haitian Parliament building,
UN mission headquarters and the National Cathedral were also destroyed.

International aid flowed in but was hampered by damaged infrastructure: the main port was damaged beyond immediate use, the one local airport was of limited capacity and border crossings with the Dominican Republic were distant and crowded. Learn how you can help through theClinton Bush Haiti Fund

Haiti will need to be completely rebuilt from the ground up, according to a journalist, as "even in good times, Haiti is an economic wreck, balancing precariously on the razors edge of calamity."

BBC - Newsbeat - How Simon Cowell's Haiti charity single was made.

AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD ON 7 FEBRUARY 2010

If the list of names doesn't already give this Haiti charity single a touch of Band Aid, then the choice of location certainly does.

Cheryl Cole, Alexandra Burke, Mika, James Morrison and Susan Boyle have all passed through the doors of Trevor Horn's Sarm Studios this week, headed for Studio 1.

It's the same studio that hosted Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure's gang in 1984 for the recording of Do They Know It's Christmas.

Sadly this time there's no Bono, Sting and Simon Le Bon huddled together round the mic.

Instead each artist is coming in solo to sing a section of the REM classic Everybody Hurts.

This cover version is getting a similar treatment to the 1997 Children in Need take on Lou Reed's Perfect Day, with each act being asked to record just one or two lines that will then get stitched together digitally to make a complete track.

Leona Lewis has scored the all important opening, laying down her vocals in a Los Angeles studio at the weekend.

That's where Robbie Williams and Take That will record their contributions later this week, while Michael Buble's voice has already been added from New York.

SuBo encounter

Over the weekend JLS and Cheryl Cole passed through Studio 1 while on Monday it was the turn of X Factor winners Joe McElderry and Alexandra Burke, who had flown in overnight from her European tour.

Tuesday began with Mika arriving fresh from France to sing. He also gets to be like Phil Collins on Band Aid and play an instrument on the track, a "New Orleans-style piano" to round off the song, as Mika put it.

She was all pumped and ready to go. She was cool, I leant in to give her a kiss but I don't think she was too keen on giving me a kiss

James Morrison said it was great to meet Susan Boyle Donate to the DEC Haiti earthquake appeal
Even though the studio hire and engineering staff were coming free, each act still only got a 45-minute time slot to nail their vocals.

Mika overran his allotted time so James Morrison had to wait a while, but he was fine as that meant he had time for a quick sarnie from round the corner.

James also had the added bonus of knowing the producer Steve Robson, so was ecstatic with his pre-selected lines.

"He (Steve) said that I'd have the middle eight and I was like, 'Wicked!' That's one of the best bits in the song."

So that means James spent the afternoon trying to better Michael Stipe by belting out 'Don't throw your hand... oh, no... don't throw your hand.'

By mid-afternoon on Tuesday the artists at Sarm were starting to overlap, allowing James Morrison a rare Susan Boyle encounter.

"She was all pumped and ready to go," James said. "She was cool, I leant in to give her a kiss but I don't think she was too keen on giving me a kiss."

Hardly a "feed the world" group hug moment, but then again this recording was low key in comparison.

Video shot

Each act came in one by one to stand at the single microphone in the voice booth in the middle of the relatively large studio, with that piano for Mika just off to one side.

James Morrison James Morrison was joined by the likes of Rod Stewart and Alexandra Burke

As for SuBo, she admitted she didn't know this REM song very well so had to learn her part from scratch.

But she thinks it's a "very nice song" and admits "it was an honour to be picked".

The day ended with Rod Stewart arriving to add his contribution after Simon Cowell called him personally, although more acts are expected to join in over the coming days.

The video to accompany Everybody Hurts is being made simultaneously with the recording, so in another nod to Band Aid, expect to see a lot of artists at the mic wearing headphones as they sing along.

The estimated release date is 7 February, with proceeds going to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and there's already talk this could become one of the biggest selling singles of all time.

On January 12, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. Join recovery efforts mobilizing around the world to assist earthquake victims. Your donation will help disaster victims rebuild their lives and their communities. Google will also donate $1 million to help organizations provide relief.

Reading the Sunday Times, South Africa this morning, the heartbreaking accounts from Search & Rescue Workers who were deployed to Haiti and have now returned after the S&R was officially called off on Saturday, describe in graphic detail the absolute devastation that is facing this nation. One account is how a dog ate a corpse in the street, and onlookers - well they remained onlookers. Their spirits are understandably broken, hope is almost all but completely gone. Bodies are piled up outside the Capital's Mortuary, the stench is putrefying.

The death toll is currently at just over 111000. It is estimated that 2.5 million Haitians have been left homeless or without basic requirements necessary for survival. The death toll is expected to rise to 200000.

It is at this time that we have all witnessed Organisations, NGO's, private individuals, corporations, companies, performing artists etc stand together in an effort to at least alleviate some of the suffering and desperation, and pave the way to rebuilding this crushed nation, no mean feat considering that the nation was poverty-stricken to begin with, there are cries for the return of the ousted ex-President, who now resides in luxurious exile in South Africa, and receives the same income and benefits as a South Africa Cabinet Minister. He currently resides in a lush suburb in South Africa's Capital, Pretoria, with his wife and 2 children, apparently wholly supported financially by the South African Government. He was ousted in 2004 amidst inter alia charges of corruption, human rights violations and murder. If politics come into play between him and the current president, who is operating from make-shift offices, further extreme challenges will be facing this desperate Nation.

Below is a list of reputable and verified organisations that are all involved with raising funds and awareness for this Haitian disaster relief...... Please take 5 minutes of your time to visit one of these sponsors.

Haiti - officially the Republic of Haiti  - is a Caribbean country. Along with the
Dominican Republic, it occupies the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater
Antillean archipelago. Ayiti (meaning the land of high mountains) was the
indigenous or Amerindian name for the mountainous western side of
the island. The country's highest point is Pic la Selle, at 2,680 metres (8,793
ft). The total area of Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) and its
capital is Port-au-Prince. Haitian Creole and French are the official
languages.

Haiti's regional, historical and ethnolinguistic position is unique for several
reasons. It was the first independent nation in Latin America, the first post-
colonial independent black-led nation in the world, and the only nation
whose independence was gained as part of a successful slave rebellion.
Despite having common cultural links with its Hispanic-caribbean
neighbours, Haiti is the only predominantly Francophone independent
nation in the Americas. It is one of only two independent nations in the
Americas (along with Canada) that designate French as an official
language; the other French-speaking areas are all overseas departements,
or collectives, of France.

Haiti has a long and storied history and therefore retains a very rich culture.

Haiti - officially the Republic of Haiti - is a Caribbean country. Along with the Dominican Republic, it occupies the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antillean archipelago. Haiti has a long and storied history and therefore retains a very rich culture. Haitian culture is a mixture of primarily French, African elements, and native Taíno, with some lesser influence from the colonial Spanish. The country's customs essentially are a blend of cultural beliefs that derived from the various ethnic groups that inhabited the island of Hispaniola. In nearly all aspects of modern Haitian society however, the European and African elements dominate. Haiti is world famous for its distinctive art, notably painting and sculpture.

Care2 just launched our new, free Click to Help Haiti, partnering with respected international relief nonprofit Oxfam to help fund emergency water and sanitation services for survivors of last week's devastating earthquake in Haiti.

I'm now reading that the death toll in Haiti could be as high as 200,000, maybe more. That's two percent of Haiti's total population. The scale of this disaster is almost beyond our comprehension, but what is crystal clear is this: Haiti will need every global citizen's help now and for a long time to come to recover and rebuild. Haiti Relief Goes a-Twittering

The Presidential Palace Reflecting Earthquake Damage (Source: Wikipedia CC License)

We have received so many requests for further information regarding @MentionHaiti and the fundraising initiative undertaken that we feel it beneficial to post FAQ for those wonderful people who have come on board and helped us get this initiative smokin'..... For Twitter users who still require information, please read below, also you can visit some Twitter Links at the bottom of this post..

Gratitude and thanks to everyone who has responded to our plea.

Please read further to see the impact YOU can have on Making a Difference.

FAQ
What is the purpose of @MentionHaiti?

We are trying to create an easy way for people to demonstrate their support for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti and reward this demonstration of support by having our sponsors donate money to disaster relief for Haiti.

Who is the sponsor donating the money to?

Doctors Without Borders.

Why did you choose Doctors Without Borders?

Doctors Without Borders has been working in Haiti since 1991, and has a well established presence with 813 full-time staff permanently on site. At the moment this number is augmented by whatever additional relief staff can make it to Haiti. Doctors Without Borders provides comprehensive trauma care at the Trinité Trauma Centre and Pacot Rehabilitation Center in Port-au-Prince. In 2008, 17,950 patients were treated in the emergency room, and 6,196 underwent surgery. Trinité is the only functioning trauma centre in Port-au-Prince.

Doctors Without Borders strives to operate efficiently and to minimize fundraising and administrative costs. Between 1995 and 2006, more than 85 percent of expenditure to MSF's social mission was allocated to programs and public education activities. Maintaining this standard is a high priority for them. You can see their annual financial statements here: http://www.msf.org.uk/annualaccounts.aspx

Who are the sponsors of the @MentionHaiti campaign?

The sponsor is a Gulf State embassy in London that desires to remain anonymous.

What countries are considered to be Gulf States?

The following countries are in the the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the sultanate of Oman, Kuwait, Qatar,
and the United Arab Emirates.

Why does the Gulf State embassy in London want their sponsorship to remain anonymous?

It is part of their culture to not be boastful about giving. Publicizing charitable activities is considered improper.

What assurances do I have that the sponsor will actually donate the money if I @MentionHaiti?

Right now you have to trust that money will be donated. When the donation is made . Receipts of the donation will be posted on the blogs .

I want to help Haiti. How can I help?

If you add @MentionHaiti in any Tweet you will be added to one of our Twitter lists and $10 will be donated to Doctors Without Borders. This includes simply replying to @MentionHaiti so you do not have to make it a tweet all of your followers will see, although that would obviously help get the word out.

We also want to inform people about the current conditions in Haiti, the progress being made with disaster relief in Haiti and how social media and the Internet is being used to raise funds and organize relief efforts. If you find great articles related to these subjects please include (cc @MentionHaiti) with your updates that link to these and we will RT your update.

Is there a limit to how much can be raised via @MentionHaiti Twitter campaign?

Yes. Our sponsor, a Gulf State embassy in London, will donate up to $50,000. Which means that the first 5000 people to @MentionHaiti will be be put in one of our @MentionHaiti lists and $10 donated for each list member.

Can I @MentionHaiti in Tweets more than once?

Yes. Your first Tweet with @MentionHaiti raises $10 for Haiti, all subsequent Tweets
after the first one will not raise additional funds for Haiti, but helps us get more people to @MentionHaiti. We appreciate that.

I want to help raise more than $10 how can I do that?

You can comment on every blog post at http://saffronandblueberry.blogspot.com and $10 will be donated for every single comment in the blog (with a limitation of one comment per post) which means by taking less than [40 minutes] your time volunteered will raise over [$1000].

Is there any limit to the amount of money that can be raised by commenting on the blog?

Per person, the limitation is $1090 because there are 109 posts on the blog. Overall, there is no limit however.

Millions of people could comment on the blog. Isn't it risky to not have a limit on what could be contributed?

We would like to have the problem of too many people commenting on the blog. If it comes to that, the sponsor can declare a cap
to the amount that can be raised on the blog. Please comment on as many posts as you can to raise money for Haiti.

Does the blog benefit from the comments in any way?

No, the blog has no ads or corporate sponsors and thus derives no revenue from traffic. Of course, if you find the food articles
interesting please come back and visit the blog or subscribe to it.

I'd like to be a sponsor is that possible?

Yes. Please contact us.

What do I have to lose from doing this?

The only effort that is required is to click Reply & Update to any update found at http://twitter.com/MentionHaiti. That is it.
Try it. Spreading the message and raising money for Haiti is a great thing that you can do to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Haiti's worst earthquake in 200 years struck, devastating the capital city, killing hundreds of thousands and threatening over 3 million people in this desperately poor country.

Based on expert advice from leading humanitarian NGOs who have been working in Haiti for over 20 years, we're offering donations to trusted local organizations, including:

  1. Honor and Respect for Bel Air, a big community-based network in Haitis capital Port-au-Prince, which is also supported by our friends at the respected Brazilian NGO Viva Rio

  2. Coordination Régionale des Organisations de Sud-Est (CROSE), which brings together some of the most active community groups in the South of Haiti where the earthquake struck hardest. These groups include: women's groups, schools networks and local cooperatives

  3. Zanmi Lasante, sister organization of Partners in Health (PiH) in Haiti. PiH and its partners have been among the first to respond with emergency medical services to the most vulnerable

In 2008, Avaaz members donated over $2 million for Burmese monks to respond to the devastating Cyclone Nargis. Our money made an incredible difference there -- because it went directly to local people on the front lines of the aid effort.

Times of painful tragedy can bring out the best in us by bringing people together. Let's join with the people of Haiti to help them rescue their communities from this brutal disaster -- act now at this link:

From South Africa? Local Reputable and Verified Haiti Relief Organisations

Tap Tap Bus, a beautiful colourful sight in Haiti

South Africans have seen the devastation in Haiti, it is televised daily, with regular news updates. At this time, people are starving, supplies are at a minimum, desperation is written on everyone's faces. The descriptions given to us by some of the SA S&R Teams that have returned to SA are grim, heartbreaking; that of children having to have limbs amputated with the bare minimum of medication; makeshift hospitals resembling something from a Vietnam movie; exhausted, but determined relief workers pushing themselves to the limit, working against the clock to try and make a dent in providing the essential medical treatment and basic supplies for survival.

While we in South Africa are feeling the worldwide recession, possibly more so than many other countries, due largely to the high incidence of mismanagement, crime and corruption within our governments and municipalities, a small donation of R30 (US$5) made by one million people will go a very long way to providing some assistance, and making a difference, possibly between life and death. South Africa has recently topped the 5 million mark in internet users. Imagine if every one of those who could, DID, contribute via the internet - NO DONATION IS TOO SMALL OR INSIGNIFICANT!

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. PLEASE, THESE PEOPLE NEED AS MUCH SUPPORT AS WE CAN POSSIBLY GIVE THEM.

A number of Highly Esteemed Professionals, some of whom are known to me personally, continuously selflessly give of their time, resources and expertise. They were the first team to be deployed from South Africa, at a time when the SA Government stated they were not in a position to assist with Relief Aid. Without hesitation, upon hearing of the disaster, GOTG immediately set about making arrangements to send professional medical personnel, relief supplies etc to Haiti. GOTG sent 42 Volunteers to Haiti, returned to SA on 23 January 2010, after the Search & Rescue had been officially called off. A truly GREAT Organisation.
