Ideas For Homeschoolers
I homeschooled my children for nine years and started what I believe was the first homeschooling blog on the internet back in 2001: Linda's Homeschool Weblog. (If anyone knows of an earlier one please let me know!)
On this lens I'm collecting homeschooling ideas for children of various ages. Have fun with homeschooling, and remember, a day spent together with your child is priceless.
Administration
Teach yourself first. Organize your homeschool. Decide on your homeschooling philosophy. Get your paperwork in order. Know your state laws. Have a plan.
Journal Your Homeschooling
...every day.
If you keep a journal account of things your child is doing each day, you'll have a ready reference book in case anyone ever challenges you, inferring that you might not be teaching your child enough. A journal is especially important if you're unschooling.

A few articles from my homeschool blog
...yes, I still have one!
When my children were homeschooling I started a blog called Linda's Homeschool Weblog. So far as I know it was the first homeschool blog on the internet. It started September 28, 2001. If you know of any homeschool blogs older than that, please let me know so I can stop claiming mine was the first. At the time I couldn't find any other homeschooling blogs on the internet. I closed that blog when my children quit homeschooling.
My newer homeschool blog is still being used. It is called Independent Homeschooling.

Subjects For Homeschoolers
...this is what I used.
For you who need to put together some kind of curriculum plan for the year, this list will give you a start.
This is my basic list of subject topics I used while my children were homeschooling. You can add anything your child is especially interested in, or incorporate your children's interests as part of the given subjects.
-
Language Arts - this includes learning to read, writing, literature, and foreign language.
-
Mathematics - this starts with counting, then addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It covers money, decimals, and fractions during the later elementary school years. Older students go on to algebra and geometry, then calculus and trigonometry if desired.
-
Science - we put an emphasis on this as the children loved it and because it plays such an important role in understanding the world we live in.
-
Social Studies - we were major social studies buffs. History was always a popular topic, as was geography and sociology.
-
The Arts - I believe emphasis on the arts is germane to the mental health of every human being. The arts include visual arts, art appreciation, music, and creative writing.
-
Physical Education - every child needs to get his exercise, and a basic understanding of various sports will help considerably as well.
What I did with the list above...
...how a subject list can come in handy.
My state, California, requires a Course of Study when filing the Private School Affidavit. Nobody ever asked to see my Course of Study, but I always had it in a file cabinet near the front door.
Many states are more demanding of homeschooling parents, and want a curriculum list. If that is the case in your state and you want to homeschool without a purchased curriculum like Calvert or Abeka, you can use the list and scan Amazon for titles that fit the subjects and would interest your children.
I almost always kept a curriculum planner, not to plan our lessons, but to write down what we actually did each day. I thought this was an easy, organized way to keep a record proving that learning was happening in our home. I used the subjects above to label the columns and there was just enough room in the boxes to keep track of what was done. I also used a page in the planner for an attendance record - something required for private schools in California. Just like with the Course of Study - nobody ever asked to look at our attendance record or my notes on what we'd done - but knowing it was there as ongoing proof was a great stress reliever.

- I'm glad that a lot of parents are considering ?>homeschooling their children. I think its the best thing parents can do for their children - giving the best education they can. Homeschooling, even through high school, is becoming more and more popular as more resources are made available. I found a great one here. Thanks for the great lens!

- I went out to read some of the articles on your blog and the one I was most interested in was about charter schools and homeschooling. We are currently enrolled in a charter school program because this is all new to us. I also do not like the restrictions and will be changing next year. Homeschooling is a daunting task if you have not prior experience but now that I am comfortable teaching my child, I am ready to try it on my own. Thanks for all this information. Angel blessed.
