Homeschool Curriculum Reviews
We began our homeschooling journey eleven years ago when our oldest daughter was entering into seventh grade and our youngest was one. It has been a challenging, rewarding, delightful and wild ride and we have all learned so much. I am grateful for the experience.
Homeschool Curriculum Reviews naturally flows out of my interest in trying new things. I have used stacks of curriculum trying out programs that worked for us and, of course, things that did not work so well. Sometimes what seems to inspire one child can frustrate the next one. I tend to be very eclectic in my approach and the reviews here will reflect that. I will try to concentrate here on curriculum we have used that we all enjoyed.
Different homeschooling programs can bring out the unique strengths of your child. While none of us probably have the time or the money to try out all the programs we see, I encourage you to find
home schooling books that inspire you and your children. Learning together is such a great adventure!

SUMMER READING SUGGESTIONS
If you are looking for some great books to inspire you and your children over the summer, you have come to the right place.
To encourage reading over the summer months, it is also nice to have a reward system in place. Your children may be convinced to read more if there is some incentive. You might want to give a reward for each book read or keep track of the number of pages.
Of course, some children are natural readers and may not need any further encouragement, they just need good reading material. Whatever motivates your child is the best idea.

One of My Favorite History Programs
Pros: If you are just starting out and don't have a lot of historical knowledge, this is the book for you! When we first started homeschooling I had very little understanding of history and the way it all fits together. I wish I would have had this book!Starting at the beginning and moving chronologically through time, Linda Hobar writes in a conversational way that children and adults love. She also makes the connections between biblical and secular events that so many other history programs seem to lack. Although written from a Christian perspective, the author treats other beliefs and cultures respectfully.
This is written for the fourth through eighth grade reader, but is easily adaptable to younger and older children. Having used this program in my own homeschool and in a homeschool co-op, I can tell you that children retain the information more readily than with most history programs. This is the selling point for me. I also think it makes a great history spine if you are using another curriculum. So whether you are a veteran home educator or are new to homeschooling, I give The Mystery of History a huge thumbs up!
Cons: If you are looking for a strict textbook approach, you would probably prefer a different curriculum. Also, this is not a broad brush of world history. This program takes you step by step through the events, so it may be a little too slow for some people. I think this can be solved, by taking it at your own pace - a pace that works for your children.
Obviously an older child may work through this much faster than a younger audience. I also think the addition of great literature should be included along with your study. Mrs. Hobar does provide a list of books, videos and activities that compliment each time period. This significantly enhances the program. However, there may be a temptation to skip that extra reading and just use this book. If you do that you really narrow your perspective and miss a lot of wonderful historical fiction.
