Homeschoolers Unite, ATTEND your Local Convention

Ranked #10,564 in Education, #236,321 overall

Support Many By Attending.

Support your state's homeschool convention and you will not only be supporting the organization, but you will be helping other homeschoolers and yourself as well. I hope this lens will give you a broader view of your homeschool convention then just a place to get curriculum and that you'll seriously consider attending.

Our Convention Experience

I have been attending the CHEA of California (Christian Home Educators Association) Convention since my nineteen-year-old was three years old. Since I'm not an overly disciplined person, I felt I needed to get an early start. The second year I attended, finances were tight and I thought I wouldn't be able to go. I found out that by working a significant number of hours I could attend for free and I've been serving ever since. The next year my husband started attending and serving. This was a blessing especially six years ago when we were living with my mother-in-law and the pressure was there from others to put them in school and go to work. He was able to stand firm and hold us fast to this calling. It seems like every year I hear someone say they are not attending, because they already have all of their curriculum. This grieves my heart because to me this convention has been more like a retreat with a homeschooling bent. Both my husband and I come away with a renewed spirit, focused on the Lord and our family.

This video is a little long, but is one of many types of speakers you'll find at a convention.

State Organizations Help Many

In our state this organization is supported largely by the income from these yearly conventions, and secondly by memberships and donations. For the rest of this lens I'm using the information that I know of as it refers to CHEA of California, but am assuming that it's similar for many other state organizations. They do much more than put on conventions. They protect the rights of all homeschoolers by partnering with others who keep and eye on legislative and legal issue that will affect homeschooling rights. They communicate with organizations from other states, which benefits the entire homeschool community. They also provide many benefits for their members.

My girls made me watch that video 5 times! They said, "Wow, that's just like five other families we know!"

I haven't been to a conference in YEARS. Maybe it's time again. I've been doing this for so long (since 1987) I could teach the sesssions. You know what I'm saying?

I love Tim Hawkins. I also love conventions. I have gone from just attending to speaking. Scary stuff sometimes but I love it! A conference can be a great shot in the are for a homeschooler and a good place for newbies to learn.
