A Glimpse into Our Learning Lifestyle
From our homeschool philosophy to our table and chairs, our homeschool is unique. Those unique elements give each homeschool its flavor. Some are relaxed and move at a slow pace. Others are wacky, messy, and loud. Still other homeschools are serious and driven.
I'm not sure exactly how to classify our homeschool, so I'll just let you come in and see for yourself.
Welcome to our homeschool gallery! Feel fee to browse the examples of my daughter Sprite's projects, crafts, and field trips. I've scattered links to other lenses, my blog, and other online articles in case you want more information about any particular topic.
Each photo is linked back to Flickr where even more homeschooling images are stored. I love using Flickr for homeschool. I can photograph the projects my daughter does, upload them, and then discreetly dispose of the projects. [sly snicker]
Reasons to Homeschool Poll
I used to be a public school teacher, and my daughter was in daycare at only eight weeks old. I know what it's like to work full time and be a mother. I did that for three years.
Then we moved abroad where school options were limited. Homeschooling was the only choice we had. So I plunged it and have loved every minute of it.
What's your story?
Homeschool Room
Here is a glimpse of our homeschool area -- a table and chairs, bookcases, and maps.
Nature Study -- Nature Walks
Charlotte Mason Style
Although we live in a city of several million people, we try hard to make nature study a priority. Once a week, we spend the afternoon outside -- in our own apartment complex's common garden areas, at the zoo, at a park, or at the river. The purpose is to enjoy and study nature first hand. When we travel, we take advantage of nature study at the beach Read more blog posts about nature study.
Nature Study -- Nature Journal
Charlotte Mason Style
Sometimes we take paper and pencil with us outside and draw what we observe. Other times we bring specimens back home for further examination. Regardless, our normal schedule is to work on the nature journal the day after the nature walk. A minimum of one page is expected from Sprite. I even participate and keep nature journal pages. I find that this activity is so relaxing!
Fun at the Beach
My Ultimate Must Have CM books
We homeschool with a Charlotte Mason style. That means lots of living books for all subjects.
Artist Study
Charlotte Mason Style
Each term we study a different artist by looking at one painting each day.
So far we've studied VanGogh, Monet, Renoir, Toulouse Lautrec, George Catlin, Freida Kahlo, John James Audubon, Vermeer, and Matisse. Find more about art studies at Teaching Art Headquarters.
My Main Homeschool Goals
2. Foster a strong work ethic, doing all things "as unto the Lord."
Field Trips

Of course, homeschooling doesn't necessarily happen at "home." It happens everywhere -- at museums, at parks, on planes, at the beach, on trains!
Notebooking
I use and recommend Notebooking Pages.

What is Notebooking?
We use notebooking for many subjects:
history,
science,
art,
bible,
math,
and poetry.
Most anything can go into a notebook -- postcards, summaries, graphic organizers, photographs, brochures, articles, maps, drawings, poems, diagrams, etc.
Here are some examples of Sprite's notebooking pages.
Printer/Copier/Scanner
We have this amazing machine! It's a printer, a copier, a scanner, and a fax machine! It's fantastic for all the notebooking and lapbooking we do.
Epson Stylus CX9400Fax Color All-in-One Printer
Amazon Price: $169.88 (as of 02/13/2012)![]()
After having to homeschool for a few weeks without a printer, I can affirm that a printer/copier is a necessity not a luxury.
How else would I print resources from the Internet, photocopy reproducible workbooks, and scan projects?
Lapbooking
Lapbooking has become a major part of our homeschooling! If you're not sure what it is, just click on the photos and browse around my Flickr sets. It's really easier to show you than tell you.
My Favorite Lapbooking Tool
Besides a big stack of colored cardstock, my next most valuable tool is a paper cutter. I can't cut a straight line to save my life. But with a paper cutter, I can always get it right!
Science Experiments
We use a living science curriculum called Noeo Science. It used living books and real experiments to teach! I highly recommend it! Doing science experiments is fun for my daughter. She has even asked to do baking soda and vinegar experiments during her free time.
Homeschooling Challenges
Some challenges are the same for all of us -- so many books, so little time. So many curriculum choices and limited funds!
For me, because we live abroad, simply getting good resources is one of my greatest challenges. I can't use a public library for good books. I have to buy everything and bring or ship it over.
Winter Promise Crafts
We used Winter Promise American Story as our base curriculum for grades 3-5. It's a living books program with lots of crafts and hands-on projects added in. That's just perfect for my crafty Sprite!

Timeline
I think timelines are an essential part of a homeschool.
By looking at a timeline, you have a visual picture of the sequence of historical events. They can also be used for narration.
As you can see from the photos collected here, we've used all kinds:
- notebook timelines
- wall charts
- index card timelines
- small minibook timelines
Spelling
We use a variety of creative ways to make spelling fun.
- stamps
- stencils
- dotters
- salt dough
- cut out letters
- jump spelling
- drawings
For more about spelling, visit the lens Homeschool Spelling.
