Can you really Home School through High School? Yes You Can!!!

This lens is all about homeschooling through high school. Thousands of families just like yours and mine have already successfully homeschooled highschool and so can you! The main prerequisite is simply the desire to do so. Yes, you do have to be teacher, guidance counselor, principal, parent, and friend all rolled up into one...but just think - the next time someone catches you talking to yourself, you can tell them that you are having a parent teacher conference. :-D

High School @ Home and Out in the World

My homeschool graduate is off to college and doing well. So often through the years, people have asked me "How will they do in the real world?" As if school is the real world? My kids ARE in the real world, learning real things, and, even more importantly, growing up into their own persons without the terrible press of peer pressure. Oh, they get it all right...just not so much of it.

Someone recently commented that we are not so much homeschoolers as world learners. There is a lot of truth in that.

I have assembled some of my favorite links and products to get you started. I will answer questions here as often as possible. I enjoy helping parents learn how to set their teens on a homeschooling course.

But What About Calculus and Chemistry?!!

Yes, I know. Even moms with 2 year olds who are considering homeschooling will ask how will they possibly do chemistry labs at home.

My answer is two part. First, RELAX. You don't have to know everything before you start. You can learn along the way. It is only if you are jumping into the middle of highschool that you really have to come up to speed quickly. If your children are young, you have time on your side. Join a yahoo group and learn.

Second, yes, you can do chemistry labs at home. But that doesn't mean you have to! Most areas have other options including coop classes and concurrent community classes. Some advanced classes are available online or in dvd form. You will not believe what all is out there once you start looking!

Preparing to Homeschool HIgh School DVD Set

Parents deciding to homeschool through high school need one attribute more than any other... confidence. It takes confidence, along with faith and sheer guts, to take homeschooling into the land of transcripts and college applications. Which is why Lee Binz focuses on helping parents grab hold of that vital confidence in her new dvd set "Preparing to Homeschool High School."

This is the first product of its kind that I have seen. I have browsed through 3 ring binders and books and other media to help myself as I ventured into the high school years. And I have attended workshops and lectures. However, this is two and one half hours of a one on one video presentation. There is no hurry, you can view it in the comfort of your own home, you can watch it over and over again and you can share it with your highschoolers and the other important people involved in their education.

The three professionally done dvds cover a wide range of high school topics. In addition to assuring parents that yes, they can do this, Lee covers choosing curriculum, lesson planning, keeping records (this is one of the best segments), socialization and college entrance exams among other vital subjects. At the end of each dvd, Lee spotlights the resources that she mentions in those segments which is quite helpful.

At the beginning, and all through the presentation, Lee stresses continuing to use what has worked for you in the past. She tries admirably to accommodate all the various homeschooling philosophies while focusing on a college prep education that will allow a child to have a wide range of choices after high school. Although this set may be best suited for traditional, classic, relaxed or eclectic homeschoolers, even unschoolers will find invaluable information on important resources to provide for their children who want to go onto college.

Lee is teaching from two vantage points. The first is her very successful experience as a homeschool mom with two graduates who both earned full tuition scholarships to their first choice universities. The second comes from her wealth of experience consulting with other homeschool families who are navigating the high school years. In fact, if you are just starting into the high school years, or if you are stuck in the middle with serious issues, I recommend getting the package that includes a one hour telephone consultation. You can watch the dvds making careful note of all your questions and then get them answered with the consultation.

"Preparing to Homeschool High School" on dvd is a welcome addition to the growing body of materials to help us homeschool all the way through high school. You can find this set, including a video clip from the presentation, at www.TheHomeScholar.com - click on Products. You can also sign up for the helpful free newsletter at the same site.

Does a child adapt too much to the parent if they are home schooled? How do your children make friends or more intimate relationships when they come of age? I'm certainly not knocking home schooling, I am just inquiring what to do for my children. Between public, private home and even accredited online high school programs, there is too much out there that a parent must decide on.

What I typically explain to parents who are thinking about homeschooling is that homeschooled kids definitely can and do make good friends - it simply looks a little different and is more work for the parents than if they go to school. Think of school as a "friend pool." Meaning that there will be a certain number of other kids at school with whom your child can make friends. You may help the process along but basically they are there and it is up to your child to make friends. When you homeschool, you have to create that "friend pool" by going to homeschool activities, joining homeschool groups, etc. And you end up doing a lot of taking them to friend's houses (as any parent would but more so).

Don't forget that a homeschooled child has the same chances of making friends in a neighborhood or at church or a social group that your family is involved in (like scouts or 4-H) that any other child has. One observation is that homeschool children tend to have fewer, but deeper, friendships.

I could do a whole lens on this and probably should as there is a lot more I could say. For example, one thing to consider is that the way you choose to educate your child also determines a large segment of YOUR social network and is a factor to consider.

Being a parent is not for the fainthearted! Yes, it can be hard to decide. Make priorities of what you think is most important, gather as much good information as you can about the options available to you and then make a decision. Nothing is perfect! You have to go for what will work best for your family. For ours, that has been homeschooling, hands down.

I'm homeschooling my sophmore and I love it. We've been homeschooling for 6 years now. I also teach our younger daugher who is 8. I dont buy my books from just one company - I use several different ones. One thing I can't seem to find is a good grammar program. I dont want to spend a lot of money...any ideas? I feel like he's behind in this area a little and he excels in everything else. Can you recommend a good grammar cirriculum? Should I worry if he's a little behind? Will this screw him up for college?
  • KarenHS2 Oct 26, 2010 @ 3:07 pm | delete
Grammar is one of those subjects that can be tacked at a later age especially if you are planning to continue homeschooling. Some homeschoolers actually wait purposefully until 7th or 8th grade for formal grammar lessons. If you are reading good books to her aloud, she will absorb a lot of the correct structures.

There is an excellent lens on grammar called Grammar for Homeschool that you may want to check out.
