Children's Encyclopedia of American History (Smithsonian)

My favorite book for new history learners

From the Smithsonian Institution and DK, this Children's Encyclopedia of American History by David King provides a beautifully illustrated overview from "The Constitution" to "Terrorism Strikes Home". Also includes a list of U.S. presidents, a chart with key facts about the 50 states, and the texts of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and its Amendments, and the Gettysburg Address.

A Fun Trivia Quiz on Pompeii

Written by Homeschooler Melissa at age 11

Hi, my name is Melissa, and I'm going to tell you about something I do that makes homeschooling more fun. I play Fun Trivia. It is an online quiz site with crosswords, team tournaments and over 100,000 quizzes. I have an account and play games to earn badges. You could do the same, or just play a quiz as a guest. I also joined a team ( I'm part of Anyone, Anywhere, but I think it's not that popular anymore, and I might change teams) so I could play in the daily and monthly tournaments. I am also a treasure hunter, but it's really hard and can take months or years to earn the pot of gold badge. Clues appear randomly at the top of my screen, and I write them down.

I think all the quizzes are made by Fun Trivia members (it was free to join). Creating quizzes is quite a lot of work. First, you have to play at least 100 quizzes to learn how quizzes are made. My favorite quiz topic is Harry Potter. I also like most quizzes about animals, books, spelling, and computer gaming. There are many other quizzes about hundreds of different things, and I always learn something new because interesting facts are a part of each quiz. When I was ready to make my quiz, I had to create a quiz name, put it in a category, and then write it. When it was done, I sent my quiz to an editor. The editor sent me a note saying what I had to fix, and after I fixed it she sent me a congratulations note and my quiz was live. Because I have already created a quiz, I can help you a bit with this tip from my editor. She said that there needs to be at least 2-3 sentences of interesting information after each question. My first quiz is on Pompeii. I hope you will try it. (Click on the "take Melissa's Quiz" button to link over and test your knowledge.)

Hi, Rhonda! Thanks for including my lensography here! You have a wonderful collection of resources here, as usual. I'm adding this page and your main homeschool one to Free Homeschool Units & Materials. I'm glad we seem to be on the same wavelength! :-D

Great lens! Thank you for the feature. I so appreciate that. I agree, history can be fun. It should be one of the most exciting subjects in school. Unfortunately, many times it becomes the dullest. Lensrolling to my Colonial Days lens and my Going West Unit Study lens.
