How to Homeschool

Are you thinking about Homeschooling, but don't know how. That is what "Homeschooling with Ease" is all about; showing you the ropes.Help for curriculum choices, struggling learners, state requirements, umbrellas verses county reviews, encouragement and free resources.

Let me give you a little background on how I started and some guidance on how you can begin as well.

I began Homeschooling my dd( Dear Daughter) 6 years ago. At first, I felt like a fish out of water. I didn't have any idea what she already knew and what she needed to learn. Then there was the question of how to teach her. Luckily for me, I just left my job as a paraeducator. That gave me a rough idea on how to teach. As much as I loved instructing other children,as a paraeducator I was not responsible for the success of my students. That was the teacher's responsibility. Now, I was the teacher and definitely in the hot seat.

My family came from a public school education background; consisting of Paraeducators to retired Supervisors.Needless to say, all eyes were on me to see if I could live up to the school system mentality.

It didn't take me long to decide that no matter how the system did it, I was going to follow my instincts and teach the only way I knew how. After all, who knows a child's needs better than their parent? I also came to realize that no matter how I decided to teach my dd it had to be better than being in a class room of 20-30 kids, where she was lucky to get 10 minutes of the teacher's undivided attention.

This will hold true for you as well . No matter how good you were in school your child will learn more if you are willing to invest your time in learning the ropes. You are not alone. I ,as well as other homeschoolers ,will be there to guide you along this wonderful, blessed journey.Let's begin.....

Homeschooling Steps

First Steps

ReadyLet me try to simplify this by giving you a check list of steps to follow:

1.Find out what your state requires.
This can be done by first visiting Homeschool Legal Defense Fund. This site is the first stop on the list.>>

2.Contact your public school system and see if you have to fill out a "letter of intent" to homeschool.

3. Decide whether you want to be reviewed by the public school system or be with an "umbrella". More on that later.

4.If you are leaving the public school system consider buying a set of test like the ones below and get a better understanding of where to start.

5. Once you find out what grade to teach in Language Arts, Math, Science, History ... get Cathy Duffys book (below) and choose your curriculum.
Look to Curriculum Choices in a later module to find out where to purchase books.

What and How to Teach

So how do I know what to teach?

One of the first things I did was buy a series of test packets. I had my dd take test everyday in each category (History, Science, Language Arts...). I then graded the test and marked at the top of each page the problemswith which she was having trouble with. When she reached a point in the books where she was getting frustrated, I stopped testing. I added up all the problems that were wrong and began teaching the easiest first. That way we had relatively quick success before we tackled the more challenging problems.

Please comment below in the guest book letting me know if you have any other resources that worked for you. Happy Homeschooling.

Umbrellas

Transcripts and Diplomas Made Easy

What is an Umbrella?
Unfortunately, there is no universal definition for homeschool umbrella. It can range from a group that covers your child's transcripts to one that issues report cards, host field trips and holds co-op classes. Each state has different requirements for teaching your child at home. Some states are very intrusive, requiring a teaching degree to teach at home. This is where an umbrella is a must (and HSLDA). An umbrella can cover you through their school affiliation. Because there is no site that has a list of umbrellas in each state, your best bet is to contact a homeschool parent, nearby churches, homeschool book store or google umbrellas in your area. Once you find one, get in writing the services offered and what is required. Some umbrellas do a review in your home and others have a review in a public library or other location. Find out if the review is once or twice a year. Most are held in the spring.

If you're not sure on whether to be reviewed by the state or to use an umbrella to do your reviews consider this:

What was your reasoning for Homeschooling in the first place?

Are you concerned about the state telling you how and what to teach your child?

Do you want to have your child's transcripts done for you?

Do you want a "go between" when a nosey neighbor calls the authorities to claim your child is truant?

Are looking for a diploma to show colleges?

Do you want to have a celebration for your graduate with other homeschoolers?

If you answered 'YES", you might want to look into an "umbrella".

Homeschool Verses Traditional School

What's your opinion?

Do homeschools better prepare a student socially and academically than traditional schools?

Loading

Most Definitively

Sidther says:

yes and no! My son has ASD, he was homeschooled for 18 months and was performing WAY above same aged peers academically. He did however miss out on much of the social elements... I could not force the local kids to be nice and include him, we lived in a bad area so there were no playgroups, youth groups, scouts or anything (parents were scarce too, literally- I met only ONE parent for the 17 or so kids that hung around on our street) we moved to a great place and I supplement his regular public school education, he mostly goes there for fun and the social experience, and is still performing 2 grade levels ahead! I think had the circumstances been different he would have excelled in both areas!

TeachingatHome says:

It is a proven fact that homeschooling students out perform public school pupils by "by 30 to 37 percentile points in all subjects", according to HSLDA. As for Socializing HSLDA says it best, "In home schooling, a good amount of socializing is done at the right time and with the right people. Home schooled youngsters are active in community sports, scouting, church activities, 4-H, political volunteering, community service and more. When it is time for academics, home schooled students approach their studies with vigor. The same vigor is present in social contact and service."

Struggling Learners

Struggling Teacher

So you started Homeschooling in the hopes that maybe, a little one-on-one would do the trick and Johnny would finally learn to __________.Now you're feeling like a failure, and you don't know which way to turn. You're afraid that maybe you made a mistake taking Johnny out of school to teach him at home. First, let me assure you that you are not alone. Many Homeschool Moms/Teachers experience moments of doubt. We all struggle at times. Sometimes we feel like throwing in the towel. That's normal.
Even though Homeschooling is not always a piece of cake, it's still the best thing out there. Remember that no one can love your child the way you can. And therefore no one will fight for his/her education the way you will. You just need to know that you are not alone and that help is on the way.Don't give up just yet.

Dianne Crafft, a Special Education Teacher and Nutritionist has developed programs for parents to use at home to discover their child's "glitch" and ways to overcome them. I can testify that these programs do in fact work!I have used them myself and my child has seen great improvement. Check them out for yourself.

How to Homeschool For FREE

On a Shoestring Budget

How can you homeschool for free? Is it even possible?

In an economy like today we are all struggling to make ends meet and having to buy curriculum can be daunting. Thankfully there are ways to cut corners without cutting quality.

1) You can borrow from other moms/dads who are done using a Teacher's edition for second grade math, and all you will need is the work book. If you happen to have a fifth grader and they have a fourth grader you can trade on and off books or decide which books you both will share and split the cost.
Ed Helper
2) You can teach everything from States and Capitals to Algebra on "You tube" . Then all you need to do is copy worksheets for free from sites like Ed helper.
GCF Learn Free
3) GCF Learn Free is another great site that teaches classes in Computer, Math and Reading all for FREE.

Suggestions to Prepare for College

Field Trips

Field Trips
Homeschoolers work so hard that field trips are fantastic a change of pace. Scheduling trips are a great way to enhance a lesson, reward a goal met, and provide the student and teacher something to look forward to.
When studying Gettysburg, my daughter and I grabbed hold of anything we could get our hands on, including videos from the library. Even so, it didn't all come together, until we actually visited the site and saw first hand the "Wheat Field". We labored over finishing the unit and prepared to celebrate our accomplishment. Visiting the site we had so diligently studied was amazing. It was a trip we will always cherish. After all, isn't that what you want your child to remember; cherished Home school moments?
Field trips can be anything from going to the local farmer's market and checking out what's in season, to taking an over- nighter to Williamsburg, Virginia during one of their Home school days. If you're stumped on where to go, let me give you a few suggestions. Many trips are free so take advantage of them.
Maryland Historical Society

Chocked full of items to see MHS has an extensive library and amazing collection of paintings. Prepare to spend a full day checking out all aspects of Maryland life. Go on the first Thursday of the month and admission is free!

Gettysburg
Studying the Civil War? Gettysburg is a Must-See.
As I said earlier, Gettysburg is one of the best ways to see the impact of the Civil War. First stop on the path would be the visitor's center. There you can pick up a self guided tour map for free or purchase tickets for an Escort to accompany you. If you are interested in purchasing a cd in the gift shop you can drive thru the battlefield at your own pace and get more information than just using the map. Math Troubles

Sloppy Work Makes for Wrong Answers

How many times have you had to mark a math problem wrong because your child did not line up the problem correctly? It can be extremely frustrating marking simple mistakes wrong. In addition, determining whether Johnny understood the concept becomes difficult.
There are at least two ways to solve this dilemma. The first is to simply turn the blue lined paper on its side and use the rows as place value columns. The second is to purchase graph paper. Graph paper comes in large and small boxes depending on your need. Have Johnny put one number in each box, making sure to line them up correctly. Before you know it will become a habit doing it the correct way. I have begun using this method with great success.

Homeschool Burn-Out

type=text

Homeschooling started out exciting and full of promise and now it feels like walking through quicksand. The more you struggle the worst it gets. The saddest part is you are taking your child down with you. A new day begins with more challenges and more uncertainty. You might have even questioned if you made a mistake choosing to home school. Down deep you still want to teach, you just want to do it better
.
Don't despair, every parent has questioned at least once. It's part of wanting the best for your child. Even in the public//private schools teachers get frustrated and bored. Doing the same thing day in and day out can wear on the most dedicated of educators. And who is more dedicated than a parent?

However, the trick to enjoying teaching again is not moving full steam ahead but, stepping back and regrouping. Remember, the first steps you took when you decided to instruct at home. Maybe you wrote a list of school supplies you were going to use in your classroom. Perhaps you set up a classroom like the one you had as a child when you played school. You get the idea.

Although, you have probably purchased curriculum and have been muddling through, it might be wise to reconsider what is working and what is not. Sometimes it's just a matter of changing curriculums. Cathy Duffy's "One Hundred Top Picks" is a great resource to point you in the right direction. Also, check out "Teaching-at- Home Awards" for the my favorite finds. Keep the programs that work and sell the ones that don't. The curriculum you sell might be the one someone else is searching for.

Next, take a week off and reprioritize and reorganize. Set new goals and review what you have already accomplished. If you haven't already started a journal begin one. Keep notes of what is working and what is not. Refer back to your notes, weekly, to keep on track. Ask you child what he/she is interested in learning.Involving your child in setting goals will make it more enjoyable for both of you and keep junior accountable.

Remember that you are not alone. Reach out to other homeschoolers through church, online groups like this one, Christian Home Educators(CHEN),and co-ops. If you are having trouble connecting, ask the churches near by if they have a group. In addition to the churches, you can contact your local library and ask if they know of any groups. Last, check out your home school book store. As they say, "There is strength in numbers." Gain strength and encouragement by making school fun again. You can do this!

Last and most importantly:

Proverbs 3:5-6 states

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Let God light a fire in your heart and thank Him for the blessing of homeschooling!

The Million Dollar Question

Socialization

"What about socialization?" Isn't this the first thing a parent hears when they consider homeschooling their child? "You're going to ruin Johnny. He won't know how to converse with anyone. He'll become a hermit!" Sound familiar? Well, let's take a look at this word socialization.

Webster's medical dictionary
http://www.merriam-webster.com/medical/socialization

Defines socialization:
: the process by which a human being beginning at infancy acquires the habits, beliefs, and accumulated knowledge of society through education and training for adult status

Now, that we have a definition let's examine it and see if we are indeed ruining Johnny's life by homeschooling him. First, the description discusses acquiring habits, beliefs and knowledge to prepare for adulthood.

1.It does say through education, but it does not say through public or private education.

2.It points out the need for accumulated knowledge of society. What it fails to say is this social knowledge must come from a public or private school system.
3.It points out beliefs, but whose belief system?

4.It mentions habits, but whose habits? The child who is disrespectful to adults or the child a parent chooses to interact with that is polite and caring.

After studying the definition and seeing that nowhere is an education out of the home required for a child to be socialized, we move on to further our lesson. Let's ask ourselves some questions.

What do we, as parents, want for our child when it comes to being a healthy social being?

1.Are we willing to provide outlets for Johnny to be involved with people, of all ages, outside of his home?

1.Are we willing to instill proper behavior and encourage stepping out of one's comfort zone (considering safety first) when it comes to interacting with others?

3.Have we made the effort to find co-ops, scout groups, recreational sport teams, church groups etc.?

4.Have we considered having our child help an elderly person with chores and or inviting them for lunch?

5.Have we made the attempt to visit someone in the nursing home who has no family?

6.How about helping babysit for a young family?

The possibilities are endless when it comes to socializing. The best part of Homeschooling is we get to choose who, and where, I child interacts. In doing so, we insure that our child models behavior we would be proud of. Homeschooling is a safe environment. Unlike public and private schools, bullying and disruptive behavior is something we as homeschoolers do not have to deal with. Home education is a place where Johnny can grow up in his parent's belief system and be able to discover his own beliefs before he has to defend them. That opportunity is not afforded to students of private or public school systems.
The benefits of home education are endless. Lastly, if we make the effort to get our kids involved with all age groups and teaching them in the way of the Lord we will have raised very productive human beings, not only academically, but also socially.
