HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Homeschool vs. Public School

The number of kids being schooled at home is surging forward. Why are millions of parents taking their kids out of school and back home? Why are we still educating our kids like our parents, grandparents, and our founding fore fathers? Standardized testing is leading this next generation of children away from inspiration, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Home school or Traditional School?

Welcome to Facebook, homeschoolers

Welcome to Facebook, homeschoolers
We've been working on ways to solve this-we want minors to use Facebook safely above all. Today, we're happy to announce that we've recently come up with a way for homeschoolers to join. We've created a new verification system-one that doesn't depend on being in a high school, but still provides the level of security we believe is required. So welcome, everyone, to Facebook.

I am doing the research now so I can home school my daughter. I was I had that opportunity when I was growing up. Why should I send my child to public school so someone else can raise my daughter, so I can only see her for a few hours on a school day and so I can be a lovely slave for the government and pay my taxes. I love her enough to want to spend time with her and grow in learning with her. Im looking forward to this loving experiences that millions of parents are missing out on.

Homeschool

casey says:

My response is to all opposed to home schooling:
It seems to me that all opposed are either still in high school or should be too embarrassed to say otherwise. Your grammar and word choices are ghastly, and, by the looks of it, you seem to know little about what you are debating. I am not against public schooling, but I can see a great difference in your opponents' approach. Almost all of the ?for home schooling' opinions were not so one sided. Each person seemed to express the compassion toward human decision making that your ?for public school' opinions lacked. Each and every one of you should step back and consider that perhaps your public schooling wasn't the best, and what works in one person's situation may not for another's.

Lisa says:

WOW reneerobbins, you sound like a very intelligent one, maybe you were homeschooled. So many people are so quick to shoot down something simply based on what they have seen on TV or have heard there "friends" say. The amount of homeschooled children is rising because the people of public schools are the blind ones, and it seems like the blind leading the blind. At least at home I know my children are receiving the education and the time from the teacher.

ReneeRobbins says:

In response to "JustAls" post: You only remember the homeschooled kids on those Nanny help me shows. All the other kids on those shows are not homeschooled. It's like only remembering plane crashes and not the overwhelming majority of flights that don't. Some homeschoolers are what we call "homespun" but all in all, most homeschoolers we've known, are very articulate, well-socialized, thoughtful people. Socialization in public school is a joke, though. Socialization by its definition means interacting with varied groups of people not only ones peer group, which is what "school" does. Most homeschoolers can interact with everyone from toddlers, their peers to aging adults. Give it a shot before you shoot it!

SewWithSarah says:

I've been teaching pattern making for nearly 30 years, including as CE classes for home economics teachers. I've found that these classes can only go as fast as the slowest student - and I'm sure public schools are set up the same way (no child left behind). With homeschooling, the parents can keep on pace with studies, and even throw in a little bit of entrepreneurship things. My daughter & son in law have 2 1/2 year old quads and an older brother who just turned 4 in July. They're planning on homeschooling, and I'm gonna be right there to help in any way I can.

artguy says:

I have done a couple of articles on this and I think home schooling is better. With the growing violence in public schools it not even save any more to send your child to them plus you can give your child the individual attention they need.

Alexis says:

You are 100% right. I watched an excellent video by Ken Robinson on public schools are killing creativity (you should google it) and he is DEAD ON! I think as parents we are meant to teach our children and have learning tailored to their needs. Then maybe so many children wouldn't be completely uninterested in learning anymore. I plan on blogging about some interesting homeschool software to keep learning fun...so check it out!

stargazer00 says:

As the mother of 3 formerly homeschooled young men I say homeschool all the way! One is a navy nuke (very tough school), one is in college, and one is now working. I don't see the same bond we have with our boys in public schooled kids and their parents. That alone is worth it. They all have plenty of friends of all ages. Public school needs a major overhaul.

Tiddledeewinks says:

Homeschool like Abe Lincoln had. They don't learn manners and common sense in public school, only government control. With great books, videos, internet and a loving, guiding parent, children learn in a much better environment. Religious or not, that's not the point. It's a parental right and responsibility, not a strangers'. They socialize plenty out in the world today. Too much emphisis is placed on that today!

paula says:

I agree that some homeschoolers are a bit "out there". That doesn't mean all homeschools are bad. I have been homeschooling for 12 years. My oldest is going to BYU next year and is already enrolled at our local college as a dual enrolled student. We take education seriously and I feel it is my job to prepare my kids to live in the real world. I just like the freedom that homeschool provides and the control I have over what my kids are subjected to.

I say - don't make such broad judgments about something you don't know much about. Public school is great for some and homeschool for others.

andreaberrios says:

HOMESCHOOLING!! Public Schools only puts limets in our children.

bygproductions says:

Definately Homeschool

groovyoldlady says:

We've chosen to homeschool, but I have learned not to judge others if they choose a different route.

LindaJM says:

I homeschooled two of my children for nine years - and still own a blog, Independent Homeschooling. I believe young children are best educated where they are loved the most - at home.

GrowWear says:

Homeschooling is my choice. As Bill Gates said in his speech at the National Education Summit on High Schools: America's high schools are obsolete...By obsolete, I mean that our high schools ? even when they're working exactly as designed ? cannot teach our kids what they need to know today.

No way, Monkeybrain!

justanopinion says:

I have to say public school. Not only for the education but some of the people I have come to love the most I met through school and I wouldn't be who I am today without them.

JJBoBachika says:

Home school is fine IF you can correctly and appropriately socialize your children....if you can't develop a child's social IQ you have NO business keeping them at home.
... If you can (which is not easy)- then go for it - but realize that they are missing out on stuff (good and bad) because of YOUR choice. There is no black and white to any question but I admit that even as an educator I will not home school my child (yet) because he needs to learn how to work and play well with others. Social IQ is a more accurate measurement of a person's potential ability to be happy and successful.

JustAls says:

HAHAHAHAHhahaha this is a funny funny debate... give me a break!!! Homeschoolings a JOKE.... I always see the homeschooled kids on those "Nanny Help Me" shows... scary....

lolaloliepop says:

normal schools are way better. homeschoolers always end up having no social skills or know how to deal with anything in life. plus not only do normal schools teach 'book smarts' better and more efficiently but you also learn 'worldly smarts', a good work ethic and so much other things that you could never learn homeschooled

Ralf says:

Home Schooling is for crazy religious people who think regular school isn't fundamentalist enough for them. Facts? Our kids don't need to learn facts! We've got the Bible/Koran/Qu'ran!

Haley says:

Public Schooling all the way. I had a friend who was homeschooled and she did not know most of the things I knew. Plus public school teaches you how to deal with social problems and how to make friends. Homeschooling, you are with the people you see all of the time anyways. Homeschooling is not the right way to go. Plus public school has big tests and teaches you repsonsibility and hardworking skills.
