Home security products - Home safety

It is an unfortunate fact of today that prevention is the best way to avoid, or help reduce, the possibility of being burgled.
So for a great choice and wide range of home security devices combined with following a few simple steps could perhaps save you the stress of becoming a victim.

Basic Security

This might sound easy or maybe common sense but following a few simple ideas can really make a difference and minimize the risk when it comes to being burgled. Why, maybe you are asking, well unfortunatley in today's Britain the onus is on the homeowner themselves to try and deter any would be burglar.
When popping out, even for a few moments ensure you 'lock the door' and don't leave a window open, it takes a few seconds and the majority of burglaries happen on a 'spur of the moment' basis and temptation is a major factor. Getting into simple habbits can save a lot of heartache later. Never leave keys outside unless using an adequate key safe, you don't know if anyone is watching where you place the keys, also ensure keys indoors are left out of sight for any passing eyes, again temptation is a major factor in a lot of burglaries.
Some of the simplest and most affordable home security products can deter any would be burglar, create the impression that someone is at home by using switched timers to turn on a lamp if you need to leave your home overnight, install passive infra red (PIR) lighting on outside walls, these lights illuminate when activated by someone approaching, bogus guests will not want to be seen. A visible burglar alarm bell is a great deterrent whether the alarm bell is genuine or just a dummy to give the impression that you have a burglar alarm installed. Check with your insurance company, if you have an approved burglar alarm installed you may qualify for a discount on your next renewal premium. Other home security products, which sometimes qualify for a discount on your home insurance policies, are five or seven lever locks, window locks primarily on downstairs windows, enquire with your insurance company and / or your local police force, sometimes you may get back your total outlay in the form of a discount dependant on the home security system you use. There is a wide range of affordable home security products available here, whether that would be one of the basic home security burglar alarms available today or if you wished, you could install a complete zone alarm to protect all your buildings even down to your garden sheds.
In a nutshell some of the basic security ideas will cost you nothing except a little time - time we feel well spent.

Burglar alarm systems

Burglar alarms are perhaps the most obvious and thought of deterrent to discourage potential intruders or burglars. From a basic single zone alarm which when operated can emit an audible alarm via an alarm box on an outer wall to the more sophisticated multi zone alarms with monitoring which enable an external monitoring station the power to dispatch the police if there is any unauthorised entry into your home. If choosing a burglar alarm there are two systems to pick from, a hard wired installation or a wireless installation. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks. A hard wired system won't let you down due to a dead battery whereas a wireless system doesn't require wires routing around the home. In our opinion both are as good as each other and the factors to be taken into consideration when looking for an alarm would be to ensure the system is easy for all the household to understand, its no good if the last person leaving the house cannot set the alarm on their exit, also look out for other features which are compatible with the systems you are looking at, maybe you wish to incorporate a carbon monoxide detector into the system, that's correct burglar alarms available today can also incorporate other safety devices as well. Have a good think of what you want your burglar alarm to protect, how many door contacts, how may pir detectors and so on.
Wireless burglar alarm systems are simple and could not be easier to install than you ever would imagine. Compared to a 'hard wired' burglar alarm system which as the term suggests is connected by a multicore cable or wires between the master unit and all auxillary detectors or sensors, wireless burglar alarm systems use radio signals to operate thus doing away with unsightly wires around your home and make the installation process as simple as could be, this in turn will bring savings by the way of the majority of people will be more than capable of installing a wireless burglar alarm system eliminating the cost of paying someone to install the system. Another benefit of this simplicity is the fact that you can easily add to your wireless system at future points, simply by installing further points of 'detection' or alike and pairing the new added on equipment to the master unit you can spread your installation over a time span which you are happy with. This can also apply to a hard wired system but don't forget you will have further wires to run around your home to any 'added on' points.
The master unit or the control panel is the centre point or 'brains' of any wireless or hard wired burglar alarm system and the first component of a burglar alarm system that is needed. Just like a human's brain the master unit is responsible for receiving and interpreting signals, if any of the alarms equipment is activated the control panel or master unit has the task of taking the information it is receiving and carrying out the appropriate function - i.e. sounding the alarm bell.
The control panel will also have a keypad function to enable you to control how you want the alarm to operate, you may want different 'zones' of the alarm to be on at different times, maybe common sense but perhaps during the night only the downstairs zones want to be activated to stop you, yourself activating the alarm if you perhaps needed the toilet during your sleep and activated a motion detector.
As stated above you can start a wireless burglar alarm installation and add to it at future points, you will find many devices which are compatible with these systems, to name a few would be door and window contacts, motion detectors, perhaps incorporate heat or smoke detectors maybe even a carbon monoxide detector the list can go on and on.
Ideally there should be no ifs and buts when home security and safety are the topic of conversation but we understand there is a financial implication to all of this but with the fact of being able to add to these systems very easily which enables you to spread the cost over several weeks or maybe even months we feel makes wireless burglar alarm systems a very good way forward in protecting your home and your loved ones.

Electric gates or just gates

Electric gates or just gates are a great way of enhancing your home, while adding a little or grand touch of elegance they offer extra security and perhaps confinement, keeping the younger members of the family or the family pets away from the dangers of the road outside. What could make your gates both more secure and 'convenient' than having them be an automated procedure.
Convenience equals security - how many gates do you see left open overnight - for security the convenience of the gates automatically closing at the press of a button would eliminate this happening. How many cold callers do you think closed gates would deter, especially if they couldn't manually open them.
Maybe you already have gates fitted like the more classic, traditional type, usually wrought iron, or maybe the more modern wooden gates, modifying these into electric driveway gates is simply a matter of fitting an electric gate kit which is quite simple and straightforward.
Not many might see gates as enhancing a properties security or may feel they are out of their price range but combined with a fence they act as a great deterrent by making access difficult or impossible to unwanted callers and also add that touch of elegance whilst being more than ever affordable in today's climate.

Safety in the home

Along with the home security products available we also offer access to everyday home safety devices such as a carbon monoxide gas analyzer and smoke alarms to help ensure your protection from any unforeseen dangers, which can be most common in lots of properties and which, if pass unnoticed can be fatal. Co (carbon monoxide) is a killer, this odourless gas, produced by carbon based fuels can be lethal yet an affordable carbon monoxide gas detector could alert you before the levels reach dangerous. Perhaps the most common home safety issues would be fire, apart from the devastating effects on personal belongings fire can cause, it shows no mercy and can spread at an alarming speed but yet again simple affordable alarms could alert you to the danger, giving you the chance to escape.

From home security products to a personal alarm, from a carbon monoxide gas analyzer to a battery operated smoke alarm, here you can find all your home security and safety needs in one place to help keep you safe and secure in and around your home. Please feel free to browse the site and we are sure, if you know what you are looking for, you will find it within our categories. Quite simply the majority of either the home security products or the home safety ideas available from make your home safe are that affordable it would be a crime not to investigate further and at the end of the day what price can we put on our well being or safety.

Carbon monoxide gas analyzer - CO

In every home, we encourage as well as fitting a smoke alarm, to also install a carbon monoxide gas analyzer as a standard practice. These detectors are both as easy to install as smoke detectors and as affordable, also fitting a carbon monoxide gas analyzer is around a fifteen minute task, which could save the lives of your nearest and dearest. Please understand that a carbon monoxide gas analyzer does not act as a smoke alarm and vice a versa, a carbon monoxide gas analyzer acts as a detector, to detect carbon monoxide and most will usually give an audible alarm when this toxic gas (CO) reaches dangerous levels. It is however possible to buy a dual detector which will detect both carbon monoxide and smoke.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced when fossil based fuels are burnt including gas, oil or coal to name a few. This by-product has no smell, taste and is transparent making a carbon monoxide gas analyzer the only option to alert your household to any increasingly dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. There are numerous occurrences, which can release carbon monoxide into your home, a gas fire, a gas cooker a car in an attached garage, the boiler, the list can go on and on and although most of these are fine when installed or operated correctly, they can be most deadly when not. As well as fitting a carbon monoxide gas analyzer we would also suggest having a yearly maintenance agreement with a recognised qualified technician to service any appliances or equipment capable of releasing CO.
Please don't underestimate this silent killer, as stated above we encourage everyone to install a carbon monoxide gas analyzer and along with regular servicing help ensure your family's safety from this deadly gas

Fire extinguishers

Keeping a Fire extinguisher or fire blanket in the home could turn out to be extremely helpful if you find you are confronted with lets say a small kitchen fire or alike. The main types of fire extinguisher, which there are three, are powder, foam and water. Another type which is thought to be the best for household use is an AFFF extinguisher, or Aqueous Film Forming Foam as these are great at fighting various types of fire. It is recommended with any fire extinguisher that you familiarize yourself with the instructions that accompany it and always be aware that before trying to confront any small fire ensure that everybody is safe and well away, possibly even outdoors and never forget your own safety ensuring you have a escape route and even with the slightest doubt do not attempt to extinguish the fire - regardless of how small it may seem. To put simply fire extinguishers are pressurised containers, these containers can release a solution to fight a fire in a controlled direction. Fire blankets on the other hand are sheets of material that are fire resistant and are used to cover or smother a fire which cuts of the fires supply of oxygen. This does however mean that you will need to get within a distance of being able to 'place' the fire blanket over the fire which particularly puts your hands at a risk of being burnt. Fire blankets are cheaper than an extinguisher but do have more limitations like the fire needs to be small and contained - like a chip pan fire - and again please remember if in any doubt do not even attempt to extinguish the fire.

Personal alarm

We all have the right in our daily lives to feel safe and secure whilst going about our business. Carrying a personal alarm with you can install confidence and self belief to help you perhaps expand your horizons. Maybe surprisingly the purpose of carrying a personal alarm is NOT to attract or get the attention of any passers by, if any are within earshot or in today's age take any notice, but to shock an attacker and disorientate them basically giving you a few vital seconds to get away. The main element has to be the noise or sound that the personal alarm emits, most would agree it wants to be at least 130 decibels, or above, (in volume) and be a constant 'shrill' or 'shriek'. Making a constant shrill or shriek makes the alarm dissimilar to easily recognisable alarms such as the emergency services or a car alarm and it is felt this also shocks and disorientates people better.
If buying a personal alarm there are a few things to take into account, look at your personal needs, do you go out more in the day or the night, at what points are you on your own, when out are you distant to other activity, do you carry a bag, the personal alarm has to be simple or small enough to carry whilst big enough to emit a loud enough noise to shock and disorientate. There are two main types of personal alarm, gas or battery powered, each has its pro's and con's and again look at your personal needs, it is felt that gas alarms are easier to operate and can be very loud and a battery powered personal alarm can be smaller making them easier to carry.
