Basic Security
When popping out, even for a few moments ensure you 'lock the door' and don't leave a window open, it takes a few seconds and the majority of burglaries happen on a 'spur of the moment' basis and temptation is a major factor. Getting into simple habbits can save a lot of heartache later. Never leave keys outside unless using an adequate key safe, you don't know if anyone is watching where you place the keys, also ensure keys indoors are left out of sight for any passing eyes, again temptation is a major factor in a lot of burglaries.
Some of the simplest and most affordable home security products can deter any would be burglar, create the impression that someone is at home by using switched timers to turn on a lamp if you need to leave your home overnight, install passive infra red (PIR) lighting on outside walls, these lights illuminate when activated by someone approaching, bogus guests will not want to be seen. A visible burglar alarm bell is a great deterrent whether the alarm bell is genuine or just a dummy to give the impression that you have a burglar alarm installed. Check with your insurance company, if you have an approved burglar alarm installed you may qualify for a discount on your next renewal premium. Other home security products, which sometimes qualify for a discount on your home insurance policies, are five or seven lever locks, window locks primarily on downstairs windows, enquire with your insurance company and / or your local police force, sometimes you may get back your total outlay in the form of a discount dependant on the home security system you use. There is a wide range of affordable home security products available here, whether that would be one of the basic home security burglar alarms available today or if you wished, you could install a complete zone alarm to protect all your buildings even down to your garden sheds.
In a nutshell some of the basic security ideas will cost you nothing except a little time - time we feel well spent.

Burglar alarm systems
Wireless burglar alarm systems are simple and could not be easier to install than you ever would imagine. Compared to a 'hard wired' burglar alarm system which as the term suggests is connected by a multicore cable or wires between the master unit and all auxillary detectors or sensors, wireless burglar alarm systems use radio signals to operate thus doing away with unsightly wires around your home and make the installation process as simple as could be, this in turn will bring savings by the way of the majority of people will be more than capable of installing a wireless burglar alarm system eliminating the cost of paying someone to install the system. Another benefit of this simplicity is the fact that you can easily add to your wireless system at future points, simply by installing further points of 'detection' or alike and pairing the new added on equipment to the master unit you can spread your installation over a time span which you are happy with. This can also apply to a hard wired system but don't forget you will have further wires to run around your home to any 'added on' points.
The master unit or the control panel is the centre point or 'brains' of any wireless or hard wired burglar alarm system and the first component of a burglar alarm system that is needed. Just like a human's brain the master unit is responsible for receiving and interpreting signals, if any of the alarms equipment is activated the control panel or master unit has the task of taking the information it is receiving and carrying out the appropriate function - i.e. sounding the alarm bell.
The control panel will also have a keypad function to enable you to control how you want the alarm to operate, you may want different 'zones' of the alarm to be on at different times, maybe common sense but perhaps during the night only the downstairs zones want to be activated to stop you, yourself activating the alarm if you perhaps needed the toilet during your sleep and activated a motion detector.
As stated above you can start a wireless burglar alarm installation and add to it at future points, you will find many devices which are compatible with these systems, to name a few would be door and window contacts, motion detectors, perhaps incorporate heat or smoke detectors maybe even a carbon monoxide detector the list can go on and on.
Ideally there should be no ifs and buts when home security and safety are the topic of conversation but we understand there is a financial implication to all of this but with the fact of being able to add to these systems very easily which enables you to spread the cost over several weeks or maybe even months we feel makes wireless burglar alarm systems a very good way forward in protecting your home and your loved ones.
Electric gates or just gates
Convenience equals security - how many gates do you see left open overnight - for security the convenience of the gates automatically closing at the press of a button would eliminate this happening. How many cold callers do you think closed gates would deter, especially if they couldn't manually open them.
Maybe you already have gates fitted like the more classic, traditional type, usually wrought iron, or maybe the more modern wooden gates, modifying these into electric driveway gates is simply a matter of fitting an electric gate kit which is quite simple and straightforward.
Not many might see gates as enhancing a properties security or may feel they are out of their price range but combined with a fence they act as a great deterrent by making access difficult or impossible to unwanted callers and also add that touch of elegance whilst being more than ever affordable in today's climate.

Carbon monoxide gas analyzer - CO
Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced when fossil based fuels are burnt including gas, oil or coal to name a few. This by-product has no smell, taste and is transparent making a carbon monoxide gas analyzer the only option to alert your household to any increasingly dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. There are numerous occurrences, which can release carbon monoxide into your home, a gas fire, a gas cooker a car in an attached garage, the boiler, the list can go on and on and although most of these are fine when installed or operated correctly, they can be most deadly when not. As well as fitting a carbon monoxide gas analyzer we would also suggest having a yearly maintenance agreement with a recognised qualified technician to service any appliances or equipment capable of releasing CO.
Please don't underestimate this silent killer, as stated above we encourage everyone to install a carbon monoxide gas analyzer and along with regular servicing help ensure your family's safety from this deadly gas

If buying a personal alarm there are a few things to take into account, look at your personal needs, do you go out more in the day or the night, at what points are you on your own, when out are you distant to other activity, do you carry a bag, the personal alarm has to be simple or small enough to carry whilst big enough to emit a loud enough noise to shock and disorientate. There are two main types of personal alarm, gas or battery powered, each has its pro's and con's and again look at your personal needs, it is felt that gas alarms are easier to operate and can be very loud and a battery powered personal alarm can be smaller making them easier to carry.
