Home Security DIY

A look at home security and how you can make your home - and your family - safer.

Home Security Tips: DIY Systems

Let's start off with a basic introduction. Anyone can install one of the DIY home security systems. This is true for both the hard wired and the wireless systems. DIY, or do-it-yourself, systems are sold as packaged systems or you can custom build a system by purchasing each component separately. In either case, the process should begin with a thorough review of your home security needs.

Deciding which of the DIY home security systems you should install involves evaluating the difficulty of installation and your electrical abilities. If your home is not under construction, a hard wired system will require running wires throughout the house. Running the wires themselves is not difficult, but the last thing you want is a lot of wires showing on your walls or along the baseboards. That means you'll have to run the wires in crawl spaces, through attics and down walls. A professionally installed hard wired system will look as if it was completed during construction and not added later.

That's the attraction of a wireless system - the lack of wires. The wireless DIY home security systems are easier to install, because they use radio frequencies. The homeowner can install battery powered sensors on windows and doors. You can also include motion detectors and smoke detectors in your system. It's easy to add-on to the system also, since there is no wiring involved. The only catch is that technology changes rapidly and add-on components compatible to older wireless systems may not be available down the road.

The hard wired DIY home security systems are a better choice if you know for a fact you'll want to expand the system at a later date. You can begin with a basic kit which includes components similar to the wireless system. These include window and door sensors, motion detectors and a control panel box.

Some of the simplest DIY home security systems use wireless sensors on doors and windows, but the control box is your computer. You install a computer card and software which runs the program. If you're tech savvy, this system is easy to install and takes advantage of your home computerization.

Home Security Tips: DIY Systems (Part 2)

Special Considerations

When choosing one of the DIY home security systems, there are a couple of other considerations. If you have pets, you need to buy a system that can differentiate between small animals and humans. Otherwise, your system will be tripped every time the dog runs through the house. You also want to purchase enough window stickers and small yard signs letting everyone know your house has an alarm system installed.

There are DIY home security systems that can be set up to call the police or fire department automatically much like a monitored system professionally installed. Of course, installing such a system requires more expertise. Before attempting any installation of a DIY security system, you need to make sure you are able to properly handle the job. It's important to read the instructions that come with the unit first. In fact, you should read the instructions before you ever buy the system.

Other DIY home security systems are manufactured for outdoor monitoring also. These systems normally include motion sensors installed on lights placed strategically around the yard. When someone decides to walk through your yard or on your driveway, flood lights come on which normally scare away would-be burglars. One of the main deterrents to criminal activity which you can install is lots of light.

When you choose to install one of the DIY home security systems, you can also check into other options which may be available. For example, if you need smoke alarms or carbon dioxide monitoring, there are special components which can be purchased with many, but not all, systems. That's why it pays to do your homework before spending any money.

As you can see, if you are considering one of the DIY home security systems, you'll discover many options which increase your safety and protect your house.
