Keeping Your Family Safe
Alarms To Protect Your Family
If you have natural gas appliances, you'll want a gas detector. These can alert you in the event of a gas leak.
A carbon monoxide detector is also a good idea. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas, which prevents the blood from absorbing necessary oxygen. A CO detector can warn you of the presence of CO before it's too late.
Be sure to test these detectors regularly, to make sure that they are working. If you have any of these alarms, and they go off, get your family, and yourself out of the house, as quickly as possible, and go to the neighbor to call the fire department.

Wireless Security Systems
Motion Sensors: You'll want a motion sensor for each room that you'll be monitoring. Ideally, you should be able to program them to ignore the movement of pets.
Door and Window sensors: These set off the alarm when a door or window is opened.
Automatic Lights: These lights will turn on when motion is detected, or if someone breaks in to your home. In some cases, they also come with a remote control, so that you can turn the lights on so you don't have to enter a dark home.
You'll also want the alarm to be able to call the police or a neighbor if necessary. Some of them can be programmed to call different numbers, and allow someone at the other end to listen, and determine if the police need to be called.
In many cases, you can find a starter kit, with just a few modules, and then add more to it as you can afford it.
