Homestar Runner is a Flash cartoon series. It mixes an absurdist sense of humor with references to 1980s and 1990s pop culture, notably video games, classic television and popular music. Although originally conceived as a book written for children, the site is perhaps most popular with (and has been gravitating toward) young adults.

Homestar Runner

A self-described "star athlete" who enjoys running, Homestar refers to himself as the captain of a sports team led by the Coach Z. Nobody knows the exact sport, but Homestar claims it is America's favorite pastime. He also describes himself as being able to "run, jump, and kick the fastest, highest, and like nobody's business." Homestar also has a girlfriend called Marzipan; however, they don't seem to like each other very much and have broken up several times. His favorite food is the Bronco Trolley, peanut butter and an orange slice between two crackers, and his favorite beverage is Melonade. He is amiable but absent-minded. Homestar has no visible arms, but seems to be able to grasp things all the same, and has even been shown carrying or manipulating more than two things at once. His name was coined by The Brothers Chaps who, while listening to a Winn-Dixie grocery store commercial featuring then-Braves baseball player Mark Lemke, heard a sports-challenged friend (Jamey Huggins from Of Montreal) mangle the phrases "home run" and "all-star" into "homestar runner", while making fun of the commercial announcer who apparently sounded "old-timey".

Since he is somewhat dim, Homestar consistently assumes that everyone likes him, and is unable to grasp when he has been the victim of a prank. Thus, although he is invariably the butt of jokes, he usually goes unfazed, and sometimes manages to come out on top. This is a source of frequent frustration for Strong Bad, who once remarked, "It's like, even when we win, he wins." Strong Bad is also annoyed by Homestar's habit of borrowing and returning his possessions without the former's knowledge.

Homestar often unintentionally insults his friends, and is unable to understand their resulting feelings of anger.

The strongest man in the world contest

Strong Bad

Strong Bad is a primary character in the fictional world of Flash animated cartoon series Homestar Runner. He is best known for his "Strong Bad Emails", or "SBEmails", in which he is shown typing answers to questions written by visitors to the site on his personal computer. Modelled after a Mexican wrestler character featured in Nintendo's "Tag Team Wrestling", he is shirtless with boxing gloves for hands (though a running gag on the website claims that he originally had oven mitts) and a luchador's wrestling mask for a face. Though originally presented as a villain, Strong Bad has been favorably embraced by pop culture for his quick-witted sarcasm and infectiously abrasive voice. He is usually seen as the most popular character, although some fans object to the frequency with which he appears in comparison to other characters. His voice has changed over time from a distinctly Mexican accent to a more American one, while still retaining its "rough" quality. His eyes have also become steadily smaller.

Strong Bad E-mail

One of Strong Bad e-mails

Traditionally the most popular features on Homestar Runner are semi-regular Strong Bad Emails. The format has remained essentially unchanged: it is a series of cartoons in which Strong Bad receives an email from a fan or viewer, and starts typing his response (generally in a mocking way; criticizing names, hometowns, and grammar), and usually segues into a short cartoon.

Some features of the site, such as Teen Girl Squad, and the very popular Trogdor games/cartoons/references, originated in Strong Bad Emails. Strong Bad emails are updated frequently, and there are currently 156 emails (as of September 4th 2006), although this doesn't include the extra emails found in the DVD extras. Some concepts in the cartoon parody real world problems, such as his famous FLAGRANT SYSTEM ERROR, which, in the Homestar Runner world, is the equivalent to a Blue Screen of Death. A FLAGRANT SYSTEM ERROR can be seen during the 50 emails episode of Strong Bad emails, as well as the virus email.

The Cheat

The Cheat is a character in the Homestar Runner animated cartoon series, and is Strong Bad's "sidekick" and primary partner in crime. When his name is invoked, it is always as "The Cheat" (with the definite article), and never merely "Cheat" -- for example Strong Bad addresses him as "Hey, The Cheat" instead of "Hey, Cheat". He speaks almost entirely in a language of high-pitched squeaks and growls (called "The Cheat", appropriately enough), which only the other characters can understand. He is, however, noted as being the voice actor in his home-made cartoons, which could lead viewers to believe that he indeed can speak English, but normally chooses not to. Evidence against this theory include the fact that Matt Chapman does the voice of the Cheat while Mike Chapman does voices in the Powered by the Cheat cartoons, and the fact that the Cheat wouldn't say "Douglas" in the Strong Bad Email cheat talk. He lives in a charcoal grill belonging to the King of Town.

The Cheat is small and requires protection from larger predators. Although primarily provided by Strong Mad this protection is apparently from everybody except Strong Bad, who occasionally engages in the activity, "Kicking The Cheat". His appearance has been described as a cross between a Pikachu, a wedge of cheese, and an anvil. The Cheat has a gold tooth, although it is rarely seen. Though his yellow fur has some black spots like a Cheetah, his name also fits his passion for scheming and finding ways to cheat. Although this is supposed to be a name, there are some situations where "The Cheat" might be a species name (In the Strong Bad E-mail flashback, he (Strong Bad) said "...and the egg cracked open and out popped a lifetime supply of fishsticks... And a The Cheat!" Strong Bad remarks, "Awesome! My very own The Cheat!"

Strong Mad

Strong Mad is a character in the Homestar Runner series. Strong Mad has the size of a bear, the strength of an ox, and only slightly better verbal skills than either. (He shouts instead of talks.) He is a large neckless humanoid in a singlet. He is The Cheat's best friend and has very fond feelings for him, and few feelings (besides anger) for anyone and anything else.

He is the oldest of the three brothers Strong (himself, Strong Bad, and Strong Sad). His first appearance was in Marshmallow's Last Stand, the first full-length Homestar Runner cartoon.

While generally depicted as having low intelligence, nobody dares tell him. Strong Bad famously tells his students, including Strong Mad, to draw a dragon, only to tell him to "Just keep doin' your thing, man" after discovering Strong Mad carving the word "DAGRON" [sic] into his desk. However, he has been shown to have a primitive sense of creativity as well as an interest in dinosaurs, as evidenced in e-mails to Strong Bad where it is shown that Strong Mad has experimented both with Microsoft Paint (Mad's first-ever e-mail, sent to Strong Bad, to which he attached a crude drawing of a brontosaurus eating breakfast) and with modelling clay by making a short claymation film entitled Doug the Dino, about an orange Velociraptor-like dinosaur who interacts with and eats several cylindrical objects before being pulled into a walking toilet after trying to flush it.

Misapplication of brute force is a Strong Mad strength. While trying to wrap Marzipan's house in toilet paper one Halloween, he punched through the side of her house, holding the paper roll. His attempts at origami met a similar fate.

Strong Sad

Strong Sad is a character in the Homestar Runner series of animated cartoons. He is the Eeyore of the cast, a big round grey lump of depression, with a large bellybutton apparently given to him by Strong Bad who used a drill to make it. Strong Sad is the youngest of the brothers Strong (Strong Mad, Strong Bad, and himself), and often finds himself on the receiving end of a humiliating prank by Strong Bad, not to mention the regular pummels both brothers afford him "every hour, on the hour."

He listens to gothic and emo music (e.g., Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Brian Eno, The Cure, etc.) and speaks in a thoroughly gloomy tone, sounding like a rather deflated Radar O'Reilly. He is represented as both intellectual and creative (his drawing of a dragon in a Strong Bad email is very artistic, and his calligraphy is exemplary), but his genius is usually overwhelmed by his depression and the violent attitude of his brothers. He also likes board games (more then most people), and plays them with various other people on a regular basis. If you put a spoonful of a certain type of sauce on Strong Sad's head and ask what the temperature it is, he is somehow able to tell the weather, as portrayed in the Strong Bad email "Keep Cool."

He has never really overcome his youth as the picked-on little brother, and accepts his torment at the hands of his brothers with little complaint. Most of the other characters seem thoroughly uninterested in his presence, except for the annual Strong Sad Lookalike contest. He does manage a friendship with Marzipan, and is the only character who seems able to tolerate the presence of the enigmatic Homsar. The shape of his head is somewhat similar to the Manicouagan Reservoir, as shown in an easter egg in Strong Bad Email #146, pop-up. It has also been noted that Strong Sad's head looks similar to that of the Zoloft Dot, a spokestoon that appeared in television commercials for Zoloft in the late 1990s. His large, elephant-like feet are known as "soolnds" and are apparently worth "thousands and thousands" to poachers.

Pom Pom

Pom Pom is a character in the Homestar Runner animated cartoon series. Described as Homestar Runner's best friend, he is often characterized as a "ladies' man," and is well-known for his use of suave, sophisticated technology, such as Palm Pilots. One of the earliest featured characters, his origins date back to the original Homestar Runner children's book. In fact, Pom Pom was the first ever character made into a flash animation. However, he is currently one of the least popular main characters on the site, with appearances that have become less and less frequent. He is seen hanging out with The Poopsmith, The King of Town, and Homsar (the unpopular main characters) more often than with Homestar.

Pom Pom looks like a big orange-and-yellow ball with a minimalist oval head, and appears to be inflated. Rather than speech, he communicates using an unintelligible series of bubbling sounds, which is the same-reused sample of The Brothers Chaps blowing bubbles into a glass of milk. He seems to get around by bouncing from one "foot" to the other, thus propelling himself along. Though he is for all intents a giant blob (he carries items by letting them sink into his body, including his cell phone, wallet, and handheld computer), he possesses great strength and agility, as well as a black belt, which he has used to defend himself by pummeling Strong Bad and is skilled with a bo staff.

Pom Pom is said to come from The Isle Of Pom, where everyone bounces around happily together. But the cartoon that stated this is no longer on the main part of the web site, but is now hidden in the "Museum" section.

Marzipan

Marzipan is a character in the Homestar Runner series of animated cartoons. The only real female in the series, she is Homestar Runner's "on again/off again" girlfriend. She resembles a bell, broom, or a baseball bat wearing a skirt.

Marzipan's personality is based on number of stereotypes regarding a typical American liberal college student / activist type. She is a folk singer, pacifist, and vegetarian, and loves animals. Strong Bad likens her to "a dirty hippie - without the dirt". She, like Homestar, has no visible hands, but is still able to manipulate things in the world around her as if she had hands for no adequately explored reason. It is hinted that she has invisible hands in the cartoon "Search for the Yello-Dello" when she slaps Homestar due to a misunderstanding and her handprint appears on his face. Her acoustic guitar "Carol" is a prized possession.

Homestar doesn't seem to really understand his relationship with her and as a result, Marzipan is occasionally upset by Homestar's ineptitude. Over time, Marzipan has become more independent, and in one cartoon she became so annoyed with Homestar that she announced that she was breaking up with him (although it was apparently rescinded after Strong Bad was found to be at fault).

Marzipan's answering machine is a feature of the site where the other characters leave awkward or amusing messages. Often they involve Strong Bad posing as someone else as a prank, Homestar apologizing for his most recent blunder, and the occasional message from one of the other male characters who is desperate for female companionship (mostly Coach Z). Strong Bad's pranks may be having an effect on Marzipan, as she has called herself to prank herself so she wouldn't feel bad when someone else did so. She also shows signs of depression, such as accusing herself of eating dirt.

Unlike most of the characters in the series, Marzipan is not voiced by Matt Chapman. She is instead voiced by Missy Palmer. In an interview [1], Palmer stated that Marzipan's personality has changed to match her own.

Marzipan was originally envisioned as the King of Town's daughter, but this is no longer really upheld and is not part of the Homestar Runner canon.

Bubs

Bubs is a character in the Homestar Runner series of animated cartoons. The businessman of the series, Bubs runs the concession stand on the side of the sports field, serves as a handyman, and claims to be a good dancer. If Bubs is to be believed, his full name is "Bubs Concession Stand", as seen on his expired ID card as "Bubs C. Stand".

Bubs seems to be some sort of a con-man, as well as a cheapskate. At one point, he argues until the price of a twenty-five cent doll is dropped by two and a half cents.

He enjoys dance music and goes to night school at Disco Tech. He also owns a Keytar that he plays on occasion. Bubs loves muscle cars and once built a hot rod out of a pumpkin. Apparently, he was once able to fly, but this ability became useless after he gained a significant amount of weight, and lost the ability entirely by saying "Sbu" (his name backwards, minus the first 'b').

Bubs's voice was inspired both by actor Redd Foxx and an actual concession stand owner The Brothers Chaps knew.

Bubs and Coach Z hang out together when they aren't working, but this is implied rather than explicitly shown. When Coach Z left a message on Marzipan's answering machine while drunk, Bubs can be heard in the background, drunkenly saying, "Hey, Coach! Tell her I said, 'Hey!' No, no, just-Tell her I said, 'Bananas!' Tell her I said, 'A bluh-buncha bananas.'" It has also been hinted that he is a divorcee, that he has money problems, and is on the run from at least one collection agency.

When Bubs dons dark sunglasses and tapes a sheet of paper reading "tH" to his chest, he becomes his alter ego, the Thnikkaman. He is accompanied by voices calling "Here comes the Thnikkaman!" on his arrival and "There goes the Thnikkaman!" on his departure. The Thnikkaman apparently possesses awesome and completely undefined powers, but his only notable actions are that he says "Yeah, shut up, kid!" and "Yeah. Okay." He is regarded by the other characters as "cool", but for no apparent reason: his coolness is self-evident to them. The Thnikkaman has also left a message on Marzipan's answering machine, with the aforementioned chorus announcing his call and subsequent hanging-up. In this call, it is implied that Bubs has a Thnikka-band and Thnikka-girls.

Bubs also does the voicework for the Wheelchair in the Sweet Cuppin' Cakes sub-cartoons.

Coach Z

Coach Z is a fictional character in the Homestar Runner series of animated cartoons. As his name implies, he is the coach of the athletic team on which Homestar Runner and some of his friends play. He is also green, and it is unclear whether this is skin or some kind of body suit. When Strong Bad asked him if he is in one "With, ya know footies," he responded "Oh I got footies all right.. ATHLETE'S footies!"

Coach Z's primary gag is his thick and occasionally incomprehensible Pittsburghese/midwestern accent. An early profile suggested he came from a "foreign country." This accent causes various mutations in common English, for example, the word "job" comes across as "jorb", "jaerb", or even "JAAAAEEEEOOOORRRRRGHB!".[1] He claims to have been a hip-hop star in his home country and is a fan of the Wu-Tang Clan.

Coach Z is older than most of the other characters. While Strong Bad, Homestar, and the others appear to be written as children or teens, the Coach Z character is written as an adult, and hence performs a variety of "adult" roles in the series (at one point Coach Z is shown to be the same age as Strong Bad and Pom-Pom, but it is shown only in a Strong Bad flashback, which tend to be sketchy at best).

His favorite piece of advice, which he suggests to Homestar at various points, is "It's like a great sports play. You can't just rush into the score zone." This little gem seems to apply to any type of situation - even the ones in which it makes absolutely no sense.

The Coach has a pathetic life, and is probably the most disturbed character in the series. He has left a message on Marzipan's answering machine in which he drunkenly professes love, and it has also been hinted that he is stalking her. While several jokes involving characters drinking have been made, he is the only character to have actually appeared on screen intoxicated, having passed out from drinking Listerine (it is uncertain whether Strong Bad's consumption of soy sauce counts as drinking per se). He lives in the locker room, and spent one Decemberween eating a TV dinner while pretending to talk to his parents on a non-functional telephone. He has also hinted he has children (more specifically (and bizarrely), he has hinted at being a mother).

The King of Town

The King of Town (sometimes abbreviated as the KOT) is a fictional character in the Homestar Runner series of animated cartoons. The overweight and mustachioed King of Town appears to be ruler of nothing he surveys, and is merely humored by the other characters. By coincidence, his personality is similar to King Toadstool of the Mario comics. The King's most notable attribute is that he will eat just about everything he can get his (invisible) hands on except peas and whatsit. On several occasions he has been shown consuming items that would not normally be considered edible, such as toilet paper, automotive fluid, and deodorant. When it comes to normal food, his favorites usually involve anything with butter, or 'butter' in the name of the food. The King of Town is not thought to be cool by any of the other main characters. In his debut cartoon, he ate an entire flock of sheep (except one), forgot, then summoned Homestar Runner to uncover what happened.

As one of the Strong Bad Emails reveals, the King of Town was not always the overweight, Santa-like, unpopular character he now is. In the Strong Bad Email "flashback", the King of Town is depicted as the "svelt [sic] young Prince of Town." After coming across an unclaimed lifetime supply of fishsticks, he was never to be the same again.

The King of Town employs The Poopsmith to shovel whatsit at the castle for "reasons [the King doesn't] care to disclose." He also has a few other servants, including a blacksmith, a bugler, a knight, and a "little chef guy," although they are rarely seen. He keeps large stores of poor-quality food such as "Butter-da" (butter soda, which could possibly be for automotive use only), "Pork Snagglins," "1983 Awwww Gratin Potatoes," and "Ice Style Cream."
