Honda Hybrid Cars
Honda is known as a world leader for reliable and economical cars. Vehicles such as the Civic constantly achieve consumption levels that are so low the term "sipping on gas" almost always refers to them. It's only natural that Honda, being as committed to fuel efficiency and low emissions as they are, would be one of the first major automotive manufacturers to introduce a hybrid power train.
A few years ago the Insight was born, and now it is considered to be the de facto standard (along with the Toyota Prius) by which hybrid cars are measured. But Honda certainly didn't stop there; showing their dedication to the hybrid technology that they helped create, Honda created hybrid versions of several of their cars, including the Civic and Accord sedans.
The most notable, however, is the amazing fuel efficiency of the venerable Insight. The Insight, utilizing the first generation of Hondas Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology, can achieve a consumption rating exceeding 70 miles per gallon. Talk about literally "sipping gas". The Insight is able to achieve this rating through a variety of different methods, though the most obvious are the aerodynamics (which allow the Insight to slip through the air with little drag) and the efficiency of the small 1.0L gasoline motor/electric motor combination.
Honda Hybrid Cars: How They Works
The electric motor kicks in whenever an increased demand is being placed on the vehicle, such as under hard acceleration, or whenever the computer decides to include power from the electric motor to save on fuel. The Insight cannot be run on electric power alone, which is unlike the Toyota Prius.
The Insight also enjoys a host of other gas-saving features, but the most obvious is the automatic shutting down of its engine when at a standstill. Hit the gas, however, and the engine stars right back up in a matter of moments. The electric motor is able to provide enough low-end torque that you probably won't even notice the whole (complicated) process.
The same concepts are applied to all of Honda's other Hybrid vehicles, and the resulting increases in economy are astounding. What's more amazing, however, is the way that these hybrid vehicles have gone from being delegated only to those with a strong desire to go green to a more mainstream, seamless transition.
Honda has proved that a Hybrid vehicle doesn't have to be much different than a regular vehicle, and new owners of the Civic hybrid will certainly agree.
