Honda Outboard Engines

Honda are perhaps the world's leading manufacturer of Outboard Marine Engines of today and are currently the manufacturer of more engines than any other company in the world, churning out 14 million of them each year! In 2008 they surpassed Nissan as 2nd largest Automobile manufacturer in Japan, and currently hold the (impressive) position of the 6th largest in the world. Their sell an incredible range of marine engines, all 4-stroke, ranging from 1 to 6 cylinder, and from a tiny 2.3 (1.7) to an impressive 225 (175.5) horsepower (kilowatts). And with a whopping 53 different Outboard Marine Engines currently being manufactured by Honda, it's hard to go wrong in choosing the right engine for your boat. From inflatable dinghy to fishing trawler, there's an engine to be had.

Each individual Honda engine has a code associated with it, for examble: BF5 SU. Engine specifics can be worked out from the given code with the following rules:

All engine codes start with BH
The following number indicates power in Horsepower
Engines with R have remote control direction
Engines with T have a power engine tilt facility
Engines with G have a gas assisted engine tilt facility
Engine with C have counter rotation
Engines with S have a short shaft
Engines with L have a long shaft
Engines with X have an extra long shaft
Engines with XX have an ultra long shaft
All engine codes end with U.

So, (for example), the BF5 SU is a short shafted engine with a power of 5 horsepower, and the BF150 LCU is a 150 horsepower engine with a long shaft and counter rotation.
