What Is Acid Reflux?
stomach fluids refluxing
Acid reflux, the name says it already, is acidic fluids flowing back from the stomach into the esophagus. This may cause irritation of the walls of the esophagus which is commonly described as heartburn. These acids, burning the esophagus lining constitute a risk on inflammation, which might cause permanent damage to the esophagus, in the form of ulcers.
What Is The Cause Of Acid Reflux?
a malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter muscles
Acid reflux is caused by a malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter muscles (LES).Normally a muscular ring at the bottom of the esophagus prevents the stomach acid from "refluxing".
In GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) patients however, this muscular ring does not close properly, allowing acid to flow back. A direct manifestation of the gastric acid making contact with the sensitive esophagus and throat tissue is the burning sensation called heartburn.

Does Manuka Honey Cure Acid Reflux?
its use is no proven cure but there are certainly benefits
Probably not. Let's be realistic here, whatever type of healing honey you would use, it probably won't change the fact that a certain stomach muscle doesn't work properly. But, there are some benefits to using manuka honey in case of acid reflux.First of all there is the fact that certain dietary substances seem to weaken the LES muscle. Considering this you might assume that manuka honey, which has been clinically proven to have various skin healing effects, may be capable of strengthening the stomach muscle. I have to note that this is nothing more than theorizing.
Back to the facts. First let's examine what manuka honey exactly does.
Manuka honey kills various types of bacteria. It seems that the Helicobacer pylori bacterium is the most common cause of the overproduction of stomach acid and is also a common cause for peptic ulcers.
What's interesting is that manuka honey's unique antibacterial activity is, according to the Waikato Honey Research Unit "much more effective than other honey against Helicobacter pylori." (source)
Moreover, manuka honey has an anti-inflammatory action. This can be very helpful since the stomach acids may cause inflammation of the stomach's mucous lining. Regular use of manuka honey may prevent damage of this tissue. Once damaged, the muscle will function less well with more acid reflux as a result.
Another plus is that the use of manuka honey has no side effects while common acid reflux medicines do. It not only destroys harmful bacteria (it doesn't kill beneficial bacteria), and fights inflammation, but it also soothes.
Critical note: Manuka honey has demonstrated to heal some types of peptic ulcers by killing responsible bacteria, however, the University of Waikato cautions that the antimicrobial activity might be ineffective for most systemic ailments.
Conclusion: research is limited to comparing the effects of other types of honey on acid reflux causing bacteria. This is not evidence manuka honey cures acid reflux. The combination of aspects is hopeful and whether or not this honey is a cure, it does offer relief and may prevent (further) damage to the esophageal sphincter muscles. Time will tell.
How To Use Manuka Honey For Acid Reflux?
According to experts it is recommended to take Manuka honey on a cracker or piece of bread because this slows the rate of digestion. Thus adding to an optimally coating of the internal tract and esophagus.Furthermore is it best to do this about half an hour before breakfast and or dinner. The effects are most influential on an empty stomach. Avoid eating or drinking during this half hour. This also adds to the absorption of the honey.

which brand and strength for acid reflux
Keep in mind that not all manuka honeys have the unique healing abilities. Make sure to buy UMF, MGO, or Molan Gold Standard manuka honey with a rating of at least 10.Since the honey will be diluted once it's in the gastro intestinal tract I would personally recommend to use a rating of at least 15 or higher. These recommended, active manuka honey jars can, for example, be bought on Amazon or online shops in New Zealand.

Manuka Honey Acid Reflux Review
"For years I had this acid reflux and heartburn. After each meal, I kept on burping and burping and even when I was asleep, I had to wake up just to burp, if I don't, then I felt so uncomfortable and this affected my sleep.
I've been taking Aciphex for more than a year, but never worked out. My condition remained the same. I had undergone Endoscopy, and I was diagnosed with H. PYlori, and had some scratches on my intestinal lining. I was prescribed antibiotics and the purple pill for a month, but still, I didn't get healed.
So I did some research, and I came across with this Manuka Honey and other natural healing process. At first I was hesitant, which should I take first, and I decided to try Active Manuka Honey. I tell myself if this didn't work, I'll try another natural healing process. Initially I ordered two bottles, I took one table spoon 20-30 minutes before each meal and after 3-4 days, I was feeling better, less burping or no burping at all after each meal and during my sleep.
After I had consumed the two bottles, I was really feeling fine. Since then I keep ordering Active Manuka Honey, but I don't really take it if I don't need it So I always keep a stock of it in case I need it, I have something ready."
Critial note: I don't know anymore where I found this review. Sometimes you just know a certain review can be trusted. For example because it is mentioned in a renowned newspaper with a photo and several health care professionals being quoted. This is not the case here so I am not sure if this is based on a true experience or merely a marketing tale. Added for the sake of completeness.

Difference between Acid Reflux and GERD
GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease is not the same as acid reflux.
According to GERD.com, GERD is: "Any symptomatic clinical condition or change in tissue structure that results from the reflux of stomach or duodenal contents into the esophagus." Credits to Wisegeek.com for their excellent article on acid reflux thanks to which I found this definition of GERD.

Does The Wedge Pillow Offer Acid Reflux Relief?
Other Digestive Uses of Manuka Honey
mucous lining
Manuka honey coats the gastrointestinal tract thus soothing the mucous linings. This is thought to offer relief from several other gastrointestinal complaints such as an upset stomach, stomach and peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and diarrhea. The stomach lining has a special alkaline mucous layer that protects the stomach from the acids. This protective layer does not exist in the esophagus, which makes it vulnerable to damage from stomach acid, partially-digested food, and digestive enzymes.
Honey I Shrunk My Ulcer
a Daily Mirror article
According to the article:
Helicobacter pylori triggers acid indigestion. Although it doesn't cause symptoms in everyone, virtually all patients with duodenal ulcers are infected. Plus three quarters of those with gastric ulcers. [..]
Now researchers have found that taking four teaspoons of manuka honey, four times a day on an empty stomach for eight weeks appears to get rid of the infection.

- Hi I will be back later on this because I'm in a hurry now but experts suggest to take genuine manuka honey with a rating of at least 14. Then take in on an empty stomach on a cracker or something alike. This way it will be absorbed better. It needs to coat the intestinal lining. Best, beas.

- Hi Abdul, you could take it in water because manuka honey has shown to be effective even when diluted. Personally I would try to take it on a cracker or small piece of bread first. This way it slows the rate of digestion thus adding to an optimally coating of the internal tract and esophagus. It is often recommended because it will reach the stomach better. It might help with the acidity in your stomach as well. Hope this helps. Good luck!
